CNN will mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by replaying on the Internet the cable network's coverage of that day's events.

Viewers can watch how events unfolded starting at 8:30 a.m., minutes before the first reports of an airplane hitting the World Trade Center. The feed will run in real time, as the network showed it five years ago, until midnight.

I can remember that day like we all can. It was the worst time of my life. Out of work. No prospect of work either. Sitting at home watching Imess in the Morning when PMSNBC broke in saying a plane has hit the World Trade Center. So I started to surf around and ended up on my local CBS station. At that every moment in time, the second plane hit. I saw that live. Its been burned into my memory ever since. I'll watch that on CNN.com.

I wonder how many dumb asses out there will see it and think it's really happening. It will have an Orson Welles effect!

Well, since you have to go to the website and click through a warning screen, the number should be minimal. I expect the brain-full-of-mush coexist types will be whining about that possibility, though.

Hah, are they going replay their on air idiot insisting that a small plane hit the tower. How it was a clear day and no excuse for such incompetence, etc etc.

A fella I know was a bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 105th (?) floor.

He was laid off in August of 2001.

Time/CNN released a DVD of the 9/11 attacks. I watch my copy whenever I feel I need to recall the horror and tradgedy of that day. That day will never be forgotten in my home.

I work a late shift job so I don't get up till mid morning. About 9 am, I woke up and put on all sports WEEI in Boston thinking they'd be talking about the Sox-Yankees pennant race but instead co-host John Dennis was heard to say, "We're going back to ABC news coverage now...a plane has hit one tower of the World Trade Center".

My cable TV had been out for a few days--city work crew had
accidentally cut line--so I had to rely on free TV (on a small black and white). Ironically enough, they were supposed to fix the problem about 10 or 11 am on September 11.

Saw second plane hit; report of what was thought to be a "car bomb" at the Pentagon, etc. It was chilling--we were at war and so much was happening at once.

Went to cable TV company HQ in my town so they could give me a refund of days without connection. TVs on behind the woman at the counter were all tuned to the coverage. Then I went to a pizza place for lunch; TV coverage was on in bar, but I sat in restaurant area (could hear TV though). Looked through paper and I thought to myself, "All this stuff in my Herald today--the
rumors of Michael Jordan coming back to play, and other stuff--it's all meaningless trivia now. We're in a different world now."

Listened to radio coverage and talk about it (and yes, did watch cable channels when my cable was restored). Many music radio stations were picking up news feeds, etc. Later, a friend of mine out West was complaining to me that he was having trouble finding music to listen to at work because of the coverage. Oh, fine, just great. Don't let all that stuff happening in NYC, DC, and Pennsylvania trouble you,
my friend. Nothing to see here...

Free Republic was the ONLY information source I had other than local radio until we were sent home about 2 pm, and finally then I could see TV coverage. All the other news websites were too jammed up to function, but FR still worked (albeit very slowly).

Does anyone have a pointer to any of the 9/11 FR threads?

- Thanks

I watch that. Those firefighters and that woman were more than lucky. There but for the grace of God go I.

As I recall, FR along with other websites, slowed down or did not operate for a while that morning. I thought perhaps too many users were trying to access it. In any case, it sure made those first few minutes tense and scary.

I would like to see the CNN coverage, just to see how they handled it. Though it will be very unpleasant to see. I did not start watching TV coverage until well after 9 am, after both towers had been hit. :(

I will be doing a college radio "local music" show (WMWM
Salem MA) on Sep 10; we do a weekly moment of silence and salute to the troops, and I will play this song. For those
who have forgotten:

What is going to be unsettling is the anti-Bush commentary that will go along with it.

This is a political hit piece that will play on peoples emotions. When this is over people will go, "wow, I didn't know Bush was responsible for flying the plane into the building. How did he live? Must have been a Republican plot."

"They took all the footage
Off my TV
Said it's too disturbin'
For you and me
'It'll just breed anger,'
Is what the experts say
If it was up to me, I'd show it every day.
Some say this country's just out lookin' for a fight
Well after 9/11, man, I'd have to say that's right.
Have You Forgotten..."

I was on a county road near a place called "the dips" just a few miles from Chico, CA when I heard on the radio about the first plane. I immediately called my wife, woke her up, and told her to turn on the T.V. because the U.S. was being attacked by terrorists. As I continued on my way to Vacaville, CA, where I worked, I heard the report on the second strike. I did watch the coverage of the building calapse as it happened. A coworker's cousin was in one of the Towers and did not make it out. My eldest daughter was friends with a girl from her high school that was on Flt. 93. That day will always be remembered.

FR was my only news source for a while. The regular news websites were jammed.

I went out at lunch to a nearby Circuit City and bought a little portable TV and watched it at my desk the rest of the day.

Maybe the Mods can link those threads on the main page on 9/11?

I've been seriously considering approaching Jim about writing an FR book. I thought it would be neat to profile the life of an online community, especially during the "big" events that have happened since 1998.

A little setup, then just follow the thread(s), editing out the beebers and "Bush's Fault"s, etc for clarity and brevity. The centerpiece, of course, would be the 9/11 threads. I also think a humor chapter would be cool.

There's so much to cover: Buckhead, Achmed Villa, Green Helmet Guy and Bomb Magnet lady, "Get out of Cheney's House".

But the 9/11 threads are incredibly riveting. They send chils down my spine, even today.
