The ACLU today filed a federal lawsuit in its latest attempt to drive all reference to faith from the public square. In what is a smart PR move on the ACLU's part, they've brought a group called the Jewish War Veterans on as a plaintiff along with "local residents." So what was once a case that pitted a lone rabid atheist gadfly against an entire city and the largest veterans organization in the country...and oh, yeah the fallen heroes that the memorial was erected to honor...the ACLU has done what it does best and turned it into inter-faith strife, as if only Christians support the Mt. Soledad memorial cross. They've also decided to ask that it be moved, instead of turned into rubble. The new strategy though is still the same old story cloaked in what the ACLU thinks a bit less rancid to the taste buds. A passive display that has stood for decades, that doesn't to my knowledge possess super-secret conversion lasers that force people to worship and certainly doesn't qualify as a law passed by Congress to establish a state religion...no matter, it needs to go and the ACLU will fight from the dawn of the first Bush Administration until Bush II is back on the ranch. This case is one of the more infuriating examples of the ACLU's pathological hostility to anything that references Christianity.
From the ACLU: ACLU Represents Jewish War Veterans and San Diego Residents in Effort to Relocate Mt. Soledad Memorial
SAN DIEGO The American Civil Liberties Union, the Jewish War Veterans and local residents announced today that they are suing the U.S. government and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, charging that the continued display of the Mt. Soledad Latin cross on federally owned land unlawfully entangles government with religion.

Ping!
W should sign an executive order making the Mt Soledad Memorial a national landmark.
Why cant some lawyer with balls sue the Government to have the ACLU declared a terrorist organization?
Cross at Sunrise Rock in the Mojave Desert.
The stunning Mt Soledad cross (looks like a depiction of Christ's Crucifixion). Beautiful.
I believe he did do something like that recently...Not a National Memorial, but a National Park...
The government ought to sell that small parcel of land for $1.00 to the church. That'll shut up the ACLU.
If you read the ACLU press release there is an odd couple as plaintiffs. There is a married couple and the man is Jewish and the wife is Muslim. That has got to be a rare thing.

Hmmmm - I wonder when sectarian violence against the ACLU will commence .....
I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to let the ACLU win this one...
Now before you guys go off and think Steve has lost his noodle...
Let them win, let them tear it down, and show the destruction of this "originally privately funded" on private land on a live, nationally televised primetime program...
Make the condition and ruling of the court to smatter this over the airwaves...
That way as much of America can see what the ACLU and other groups like this stand for...
I've been there and seen the monument, its a nice place to go, visit and pay respect to whom it was dedicated to, and what they sacrificed...
Once the outrage and destruction of the ACLU is in work after that event...I bet you a new cross, and new dedication of appreciation will be built on the same spot...
If anything its something to ponder...
I'm all for protecting the monument and others like it around the country...But to think outside the box and make one more sacrifice to destroy what attacks these places...
To me that would be a good battle to fight to be able to out strategize them and let them destroy themselves in the same process...
Just an idea to ponder...
Someone should remind the Jewish veterans group that there are a whole lot of Star of Davids on Federal property marking the graves of those that paid the ultimate price. Joining this action could force those stars to be removed as well.
Sure, you bet...
I just think that this particular site is perfect to illustrate publically what this group is ALL about...
If I was someone honored there for something I did, or was a family member of someone memorialized there, I think it'd be worth one more sacrifice, knowing that it could mean the permanent destruction of an organization that has zero national value or meaning to the real reason we are a nation to begin with...
An analogy would be the ACLU beig the equivalent to a homicide bomber...They are just looking for a target to wipe out, and with that themselves...
The principle is that it is no part of the business of government to be supporting religious symbols. You would certainly agree if this were a Muslim or Hindu or Wiccam symbol. The principle applies to all religions fairly and equally. Personal religious faith is free; government endorsement of religion, even if "minor", is not what the Founding Fathers envisioned.
I they need a plantiff I'll sign on as one. Maybe if enough Freepers would join me we could file a class action lawsuit against the ACLU.
The government from what I recall was never involved until recently...
The monument was erected by a private entity on private property...I stand to be corrected if I visited or am talking about a different cross on a mountain monument...
Technically my faith does not revolve around testimony, rememberances or monuments...The ones I have visited are truely a moving and noble act of appreciation people (including myself) show to those we wish to honor in this way...My faith is personal, it doesn't require much in the way of reinforcement in iconic symbols...
The one thing the ACLU cannot do is remove us...We are the real monuments of appreciation, and testimony to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country...
Does this mean I really want them (ACLU) to win this battle???
Absolutely not...If I thought that this would be an opportunity to put them down for good...You bet!
All this rings hollow. The reality is that the ACLU is destroying things that mean something to people. The fact that they are Christian symbols rather than some other kind of symbol simply reflects our majority culture. The majority shouldn't be silenced any more than a minority should. Destroying religious symbols, by legal means just as by violent means, is a warlike act and sooner or later may get a warlike response.
Contrary to your silly assertion, no, "our Republic will NOT be exactly the same." These things matter, a lot.
No offense, 'mam....
