Global warming could be causing some glaciers to grow, a new study claims. Researchers at Newcastle University looked at temperature trends in the western Himalaya over the past century.
They found warmer winters and cooler summers, combined with more snow and rainfall, could be causing some mountain glaciers to increase in size.
The findings are significant, because temperature and rain and snow trends in the area impact on water availability for more than 50 million Pakistanis.
Researchers focussed on the Upper Indus Basin, which is the mainstay of the national economy of Pakistan and has 170,000 sq km of irrigated land - an area two-thirds the size of the UK.
Dr Hayley Fowler, senior research associate at the university's school of civil engineering and geosciences, said: "Very little research of this kind has been carried out in this region and yet the findings from our work have implications for the water supplies of around 50 million people in Pakistan."

Co-researcher David Archer added: "Our research is concerned with both climate change and the climate variability that is happening from year to year.
"Information on variability is more important for the management of the water system as it will help to forecast the inflow into reservoirs and allow for better planning of water use for irrigation.
"However, information on the impacts of climatic change is important for the longer term management of water resources and to help us understand what is happening in the mountains under global warming."
The findings are published in the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate.

Well, I do like the beer.
Let's see if I got thsi straight ... "we got this huge freaking glacier nearby and the sucker is getting bigger. What ever will we do for a water supply?" Somebody send in Tony Sinclair /obscure
Further prrof that some scientists are completely clueless about climatology.
Remember -- no matter what happens, anytime, anywhere, it's consistent with global warming theory.
IMHO - the entire "global warming" scientific community is so confused they don't know whether to scratch their watch or wind their butt.
The weather is more like it is today than it has ever been before!
You can count on it.
Someday all weather pattern changes from global warming (along with natural causes) will be modeled accurately so that the warming itself can be predicted along with all the good and bad effects. That day is not here yet. Once it is here, we can figure out exactly what we need to do, if anything, to get the effects we desire.
Wait just one damn minute. Are we expected to believe that the earth is capable of taking care of itself without the help of the precious few enlightened dwellers? How absurd!
Global warming can be blamed for rising glaciers and shrinking glaciers. Wow.
Also for wetter and drier weather, warmer and colder weather, hurricanes and the lack thereof, Need I go on?
Tony Sinclair.....
Nothing like a good Gin & Tonic with lots of glacial ice. :)
Like evolutionists, global warming fanatics will adjust their theory to accommodate every observation, however contradictory.
Man oh man these people are funny. When it warms they win, when it cools, they win. When it stays the same, they win. How does one debate arrogant asses like this?
Until these flacks can tell me what the impact of global cooling will be, they should just STFU.
The reversal of global warming is global cooling. If they even think that by implementing socialist programs like Kyoto the world will change for the better, then they wasted alot of their parents money on their college educations.
My ten year old has a better grasp of this then they do.
I've been waiting for this since the recent revelations that Greenland has been melting for one hundred years(highest rate in 1964-1985, not at the present, as we would expect) and that Antarctica is thicker than the G.W.s claimed. They have to cover all the bases-start with the presumption that G.W is "fact", then change your theories to accomodate whatever comes along. Hot summer in New York? Well, its obvious, isn't it? Cold winters? "Well, let me explain..."
"Remember -- no matter what happens, anytime, anywhere, it's consistent with global warming theory."
And, it's all Bush's fault!
Method of research:
1. Do proper scientific evaluation and note that at present there is a trend of cooler summers and warmer winters in a certain region.
2. DO NOT QUESTION GLOBAL WARMING! Global warming is a basic assumption and is applied by default to any climatological studies, no matter how localized.
3. Therefore, draw the conclusion: Global warming causes glaciers.
