Since 9/11 he wrote many political essays. He is a conservative democrat of Zell Miller type (there are still few left) who is upset with hijacking of his party by the Left. His articles are more inline with the FreeRepublic spirit than with his own political website: http://www.ornery.org/index.html that is heavily populated by American- and other Leftists who are delightfully annoyed by Mr. Card's conservatism. He does not post on that site and its moderated by somebody else.
Links: his articles discussed at FR: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/k-orsonscottcard/browse and archived here (it is a must go place for all new to OSC political writing): http://www.ornery.org/essays/warwatch/index.html
His literary, non-political website: http://www.hatrack.com
His fresh articles appear in the Rhinoceros Times, Greensboro, NC: http://www.rhinotimes.com/greensboro/ (before being posted permanently on his The Ornery American website). Read his books/movies/and everything reviews: http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/

May I be added to this Ping List please?
That was excellent. Thanks for posting it.
Another home run from OSC! It's a superb piece.

The Ornery American ^ | July 16, 2006 | Orson Scott Card I do hope that the readers of this column already know that no decent person could ever advocate that Israel negotiate with Hamas and Hezbollah or give in to their demands in the slightest in order to get their kidnapped soldiers back. The slightest concession would only guarantee that more and more Israelis would be kidnapped in the future. The only way to extinguish kidnapping is to make sure that it never,... |

Orson Scott Card: American Soldiers and How We Use Them |
||
RhinoTimes ^ | April 20, 2006 | Orson Scott Card When our young men (and women) volunteer to serve in our military, it is usually with an eye to serving their country, even at the risk of their own lives. In the process of their service, they will take orders, constantly. Sometimes those orders will come from people they respect even love. Sometimes, though, the orders will come from people they dislike, or disdain, or fear or hate. Yet the ones who last in the military learn to submerge their own will and keep silent, except when some truly outrageous or dangerous or illegal order is given whereupon... |

Orson Scott Card: Freedom of Religion: For Everyone, Everywhere |
||
The Ornery American ^ | March 26, 2006 | Orson Scott Card Poor Abdul Rahman. He lived in Germany, where there is freedom of religion. He forgot that freedom of religion only applies to non-Muslims who convert to other faiths. Muslims aren't allowed to follow their individual consciences. If you're born a Muslim, then in your entire life you will never, never have a choice about what religion to belong to. Because if you convert from Islam to another faith, good Muslims have a right -- no, a duty -- to kill you. Oh, wait. How can I say that? I keep forgetting -- we've been assured ten thousand times since 9/11... |

Orson Scott Card: Iraq -- Quit or Stay? [a very comprehensive review] |
||
The Ornery American ^ | January 15, 2006 | Orson Scott Card I keep wondering why I'm getting flashbacks to the 1960s. I never took any hallucinogenic drugs. And yet I keep hearing people on TV saying we need to bring the troops home now. Of course, back in the 60s, the people saying that were all wearing long hair and, if they were of the guy persuasion, beards; now it's people in suits. So it occurred to me that maybe they're the ones having the flashbacks. They really think this war is Vietnam. Having romanticized the anti-war movement of the 1960s, they think they're wrapping themselves in the mantle of heroes.... |
Card predicted blogging in one of the books in the Ender series. I'm pretty sure Ender's older brother, Peter, was engaged in some form of blogging, using the world wide network to distribute his papers and to gather a following.
Absolutely!
Done. Thanks
Pure and unadulterated genius. I need to start sending some emails now. . .
God bless Orson Scott Card! This is an OUTSTANDING column!
IIRC, he usually does not explicitly bash "those on the left". I wonder if he is re-thinking his Democrat allegiance. Certainly, the party seems to have moved well away from his views.
Of course, they only want certain parts of the Constitution to be malleable - the Commerce Clause being the prime example. In other cases, such as the 4th Amendment, they wish to accord the strictist possible interpretation to limit survelliance during wartime.
And when they are challenged on that dicotomy, their retort is, what makes YOUR interpretation of the meaning of words more valid than MINE? The answer is quite simple - I open up Websters to get the meaning of words. They usually just rant and call me a right-wing ideologue at that point.
Its great to see an active, devout Mormon boy like Orson get his due. Too often here, Mormons are regularly degraded and abused. Keep it up , Brother Orson.
What a superb article. Thanks so much for posting it.
(1)Declaring everything in their political agenda, a Crisis;
(2) Saying that since it is a Crisis, the debate must only validate the Anointed of the left's opinions as they are the only view that really "cares"
(3) dismisses facts as getting in the way of solutions and dismisses opposing views as motivated by evil motives of their opponents;
(4) keeps the Crisis rhetoric elevated in order to insist upon a centralized solution;
(5) appends various penalties to reinforce centralized power; and
(6) self-congratulates themselves despite ongoing evidence that the Crisis was not factual and the remedies did not work for the original issue that cause the debate to unfold.
A great read.
OUTSTANDING!
