SOME WEDNESDAY SPIN! Most in US see no tie between Iraq, terror war: poll Tue Aug 22, 10:29 PM ET A majority of Americans no longer see a link between the war in Iraq and Washington's broader anti-terrorism efforts despite President George W. Bush's insistence the two are intertwined, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said the war in Iraq was separate from the U.S. government's war on terrorism. The findings were a considerable shift from polls taken in 2002 and early 2003, when a majority considered the two to be linked, The New York Times said. As recently as June, opinion was evenly split, with 41 percent on both sides of the divide. Now only 32 percent considered Iraq to be a major part of the fight against terrorism, the newspaper said. According to the poll, 46 percent said the Bush administration had concentrated too heavily on Iraq and not enough on terrorists elsewhere. Fifty-three percent said going to war in the first place was a mistake, up from 48 percent in July, The New York Times said. Bush's approval ratings remained unchanged at 36 percent. His popularity has been damaged by the unpopular war in Iraq, in which the U.S. military death toll is 2,610. As recently as Monday, Bush defended the invasion of Iraq as crucial to preventing more domestic terror attacks. "If you believe that the job of the federal government is to secure this country, it's really important for you to understand that success in Iraq is part of securing the country," Bush said during a news conference. The unpopularity of the Iraq war has many Republicans nervous about the party's chances in the November midterm elections in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Times/CBS News poll of 1,206 adults was conducted Thursday through Monday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

SWB, I will vote for Newt if he gets the nomination, but for now, I support Allen, and would love to see Jack Kemp run again.

I'm all out of ideas.

I don't think any of them have a chance in hell of winning except for Rudy. And if Rudy wins hell is where we're going.

I really think Tony Snow is our best shot but hell will probably freeze over before that happens.

Blogging does not equal civil protest!

I can't help but feel if this were 1973, we'd
be out in the streets of DC protesting the way our
representatives have sold us out.

And where's your evidence to support that most Republicans don't care about abortion anymore? So instead of Slick-Willie, we'll get Slick-Giuliani. You really think most Republicans are so simple minded and so morally loose that they'll take the guy who looks good and sounds good and just forget about all those pesky traditional values and social beliefs that most Republicans believe in? So tell me then, if they're so unimportant, why was the GOP a MINORITY for FIFTY YEARS when it was run by Giuliani secular types with no conservative social values? Huh? Why's that??? Are you WANTING to run the GOP into the ground for another half century as a permanent minority? Because THAT is what a RINO Giuliani as President would do.

And if most Republicans are so "sick" of abortion and the other social issues like gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research and other bedrock conservative values, then WHY was the CLEAR MAJORITY of Republican voters screaming for SC nominees like Roberts and Alito who reflected those EXACT SAME traditional conservative values??? Why is that if most Republicans are so sick of that??? Why was there such MASSIVE support from the Republican majority, who was screaming for a real conservative constructionist who held those traditional Constitutional values, shared by the founders?

By your analysis, Giuliani should be picked above Anbraham Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt, or any of the founding fathers for that matter. And I challenge you to assert that most Republicans would prefer Giuliani, a RINO, over Teddy, or Abe, or any of the founders who WROTE the Constitution and MADE this country BASED on the kind of Biblical values which Giuliani does not support. Your argument just doesn't match up with the past 12 years of evidence as to what most Republicans find to be so important, EVEN since 9-11. Social values are NOT in the trunk, or the back seat to the war. They're right there by it and they are what seperate the GOP from the liberals who oppose ALL that the GOP stands for. I guess you want to scrap half the GOP plank. Good luck with that. Let me know how that turns out for you. It was passed overwhelmingly by GOP voters. THAT is the poll I stand by. :)
