SOME WEDNESDAY SPIN! Most in US see no tie between Iraq, terror war: poll Tue Aug 22, 10:29 PM ET A majority of Americans no longer see a link between the war in Iraq and Washington's broader anti-terrorism efforts despite President George W. Bush's insistence the two are intertwined, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said the war in Iraq was separate from the U.S. government's war on terrorism. The findings were a considerable shift from polls taken in 2002 and early 2003, when a majority considered the two to be linked, The New York Times said. As recently as June, opinion was evenly split, with 41 percent on both sides of the divide. Now only 32 percent considered Iraq to be a major part of the fight against terrorism, the newspaper said. According to the poll, 46 percent said the Bush administration had concentrated too heavily on Iraq and not enough on terrorists elsewhere. Fifty-three percent said going to war in the first place was a mistake, up from 48 percent in July, The New York Times said. Bush's approval ratings remained unchanged at 36 percent. His popularity has been damaged by the unpopular war in Iraq, in which the U.S. military death toll is 2,610. As recently as Monday, Bush defended the invasion of Iraq as crucial to preventing more domestic terror attacks. "If you believe that the job of the federal government is to secure this country, it's really important for you to understand that success in Iraq is part of securing the country," Bush said during a news conference. The unpopularity of the Iraq war has many Republicans nervous about the party's chances in the November midterm elections in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Times/CBS News poll of 1,206 adults was conducted Thursday through Monday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Let alone what the OB pays for malpractice insurance ... Sheesh ... in some states it's more than what most folks pay for their first house.

I've been registered as an Independant for 40yrs. I was going to vote for Wallace in 72 until he got shot. I voted for a Dem for NYC mayor in 67 to try and stop Lindsey from his second term. The Rep in that election had no chance. As I admitted to earlier, I voted for Perot in 92. At that time I was voting my pocketbook and was fed up with both parties. Every other time I've voted Republican.

Put me into whatever pigeon hole you want and call me what you will.

If I had confidence that elections and "the American
process" worked, then I would be more hopeful. But...
I do not believe it matters that reasonable conservatives
are in the majority. California regularly overturns
the will of the people.

Rush... we ARE trying to defeat liberalism. But our
weapons are no match for theirs. They are liars, invaders
and they are anti-humanity.

You obviously have never had a serious health problem. I have had seven surgeries for breast cancer.

I haven't, but both my parents have. My dad had a kidney transplant in 1989, and my mom has chronic back issues.

I thoroughly enjoyed your post - and I am delighted to hear you and I agree - what a surprise that I am pleased by such a thing.

Last week in Greenville SC I attended a Leadership Seminar - Rudy Guillani was one of the speakers - others included::

Zig Ziglar
Steve Forbes
Peter Lower
Dr. Robert Schuller
Phil Town
Steve Spurrier

and the man who blew everyone away - Rudy Guilliani

It was the first time I have had seen him in person and it was the first time I saw him for longer than a TV segment.

Flat our impressed.

Very upbeat
Very positive on the future of the USA
Very realistic about the war on Islamo-Facists
Very pro business
Very very anti crime

The man has yet to even enter the race - but when he does - and when he has to begin to answer the questions, when he has to state his positions -

I think he will blow the competition off the floor.

GO RUDY

I see. I don't know that being Italian would be an issue in the South, but being Hilary sure will.

He's right though that it's the government tinkering and inaction on the illegals that is causing a major problem in health care.

I DO agree there.

I don't think Southerners will take kindly to an Italian from NY. Just my opinion.

I'd have to either vote third party or not vote I'm afraid. I don't know that I could vote for a candidate that is pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion, pro-milk toast Kennedy-type judges, anti-death penalty. It would be like voting for a Democrat who gets the war. There wouldn't be ANY difference between Giuliani and whatever Democrat gets their nomination for President, other than Giuliani's support for the war, and if Republicans cared so little about all the many social issues that Giuliani opposes, then there wouldn't have been a Republican Majority BEFORE 9-11, because then, those issues were the ONLY issues, and there wouldn't have been any difference between the GOP and DNC candidates if those issues supposedly mean so little to most Republican voters. This argument is fundamentally flawed. Most Republican voters will not pick a RINO for President just because of a popularity contest poll two years before the fact. I'd love to see a poll asking who Republicans would vote for, with their positions on the major issues by their names. Giuliani wouldn't have gotten 30% in that poll, that much is clear, which is why the poll was so vague.

SWB, I will vote for Newt if he gets the nomination, but for now, I support Allen, and would love to see Jack Kemp run again.

Love you angcat, but I think you need to give our Southern friends a bit more credit. Tennessee wouldn't vote for Gore after all.

Damn - I keep forgetting about Newt - my bad.

Maybe Rudy will get lucky and Newt won't make it into the debates.
