SOME WEDNESDAY SPIN! Most in US see no tie between Iraq, terror war: poll Tue Aug 22, 10:29 PM ET A majority of Americans no longer see a link between the war in Iraq and Washington's broader anti-terrorism efforts despite President George W. Bush's insistence the two are intertwined, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said the war in Iraq was separate from the U.S. government's war on terrorism. The findings were a considerable shift from polls taken in 2002 and early 2003, when a majority considered the two to be linked, The New York Times said. As recently as June, opinion was evenly split, with 41 percent on both sides of the divide. Now only 32 percent considered Iraq to be a major part of the fight against terrorism, the newspaper said. According to the poll, 46 percent said the Bush administration had concentrated too heavily on Iraq and not enough on terrorists elsewhere. Fifty-three percent said going to war in the first place was a mistake, up from 48 percent in July, The New York Times said. Bush's approval ratings remained unchanged at 36 percent. His popularity has been damaged by the unpopular war in Iraq, in which the U.S. military death toll is 2,610. As recently as Monday, Bush defended the invasion of Iraq as crucial to preventing more domestic terror attacks. "If you believe that the job of the federal government is to secure this country, it's really important for you to understand that success in Iraq is part of securing the country," Bush said during a news conference. The unpopularity of the Iraq war has many Republicans nervous about the party's chances in the November midterm elections in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Times/CBS News poll of 1,206 adults was conducted Thursday through Monday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The President is the leader of the country - not simply his party.

Don't be miopic.

"It is my humble opinion that John McCain suffers from delayed stress syndrome or some type of related disease fr0m his POW time".

I have to agree with you, RetiredArmy, it seems after the 2000 election cycle his actions/outbursts started getting more out of hand.

It is up to his TRUE FRIENDS to help him, and I hope they are around.

The media uses McCain and they are pathetic!!!

Thanks. I just can't stress enough how much I like him. If I had to pick a RINO that I liked, it would be Giuliani, no contest. But issues matter and it's all the issues. They're all important and steadfast support for the war isn't enough for me to vote for a guy for President, even if I personally really like him, because Judges, marriage, and abortion are important issues also. We need a conservative for international and domestic issues. Not a international hawk, and a domestic lib, and I hate even using "lib" in reference to Giuliani, but his positions on those issues are considered to be "liberal". I still don't like saying it though because I like and admire him. OH for Giuliani to be a solid full-plank conservative. What a great asset. :)

StoneWall, you don't have to convince me...Newt's my number one candidate for the time being. The problem is because of the other issues that "get in the way"--the extra-marital affair which WAS pretty tawdry, and the political dalliance with Hillary(?) he's made enemies on this thread that I don't know that we can get past. I'm comfortable with Newt or Rudy. I have to hold my nose on some of Rudy's social views, particularly the civil union issue, but his judicial philosophy is as conservative as the President's. I'm not comfortable with Romney, McCain, Hegel-the-rat; and I don't think Allen has a chance...

Yes...unfortunately, a lot of the people he works with only "remember" Vietnam from the way KERRY and MURTHA talk about it...the quagmire and all...

So...they have no way of knowing the truth..and they don't want to know.

There are a BUNCH that believe the "9/11 was planned by Bush" crapola.

If we don't have a country, none of the other issues matter. I'm afraid that that is the point we are at today.
