Teams woo female fans with freebies, but a lawyer cries foul.

Dispute's outcome could have ramifications for Major League Baseball.

Long before the Baltimore Orioles passed out lipstick and the Red Sox and other baseball teams began selling pink hats, ``ladies-night" giveaways have been a fixture of America's pastime.

But a California lawyer, denied a free hat at an Oakland A's game because they were reserved for female fans, has filed suit against the team to put a stop to the practice. Alfred Rava calls such giveaways ``sex discrimination on steroids." He is also suing the Los Angeles Angels for giving away tote bags to women only on Mother's Day.

When Rava attended the Oakland game in 2004 , he said he asked for one of the hats that were being given out. ``The woman laughed at me and said, `No, these are only for females,' " or ``words to that effect," Rava said.

He said he filed the suits ``on behalf of other males who were denied [giveaways] because of their sex." He is seeking damages of $4,000 for each man at the games who did not receive gifts.

The outcome of the dispute could have ramifications for Major League Baseball, as well as for minor league teams, which frequently run promotions targeted at women and other specific groups . The Angels tried to make amends by offering a free tote bag, but it did little to placate Rava and the client he is representing in the case (``too late -- the discrimination had already occurred," Rava said.)

The A's, meanwhile, have changed their policy: They decided to let men into their Baseball 101 clinic, which had been marketed toward women, and the team no longer bases its promotions on gender.

``We're cognizant of it," said an A's spokesman, Jim Young . Even children's backpack giveaways now are available ..................

What is the difference between a date and a serious date for this kind of guy? This is wide open for Clintonian parsing.

This guy has a history of filing frivolous lawsuits. If he can find a judge or jury dumb enough, he would collect $60 million (assuming 15,000 male fans).

The best thing is for a police officer's gun to accidentally discharge in the courtroom. The world would be better off without this puke.

I thought the Equal Rights Amendment failed to get ratified. When was it passed again?

"SECTION 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
"SEC. 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
"SEC. 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification."

And he has to wear it into the men's room in the bleachers.
This is the same guy that goes to the beer stand and orders wine.

The Royals gave away halter tops. Any pictures? (In use, not just the halter by itself.)

The problem is, that while he did, occasionally, get his a@@ kicked in high school, it was apparently not enough. Tar and feathers was the solution to a lot of this kind of crap.

Total narcissism. Because he didn't like something, getting an item for a few bucks, he wants to impose his will on how the team handles promotions to fill the seats and increase profit. What a major league a**h***.

Los Angeles psychologist Michael Cohn is the client. He thinks thousands of people are owed $4,000 each in damages. Just incredible.

This is so typical of what is wrong with the legal profession. A fun and profitable business promotion will be ended. Just wait. There will be a suit by someone who had to pay full price for a Big Mac, when some other guy had a coupon for a small discount. Why should he get to pay less just because he cut something out of the newspaper?

I just hope psychologist Michael Cohn does not ever make one of his violent psycho patients really angry. I think we would all be very sad with the results.

The only thing that pi$$es me off more about this a$$hole and his exploits is the cowards who roll over and settle without a fight.

No I think it was more like, "Whatever weirdo, these are for women, not gender confused wusses like you!!" And then after a good cry he decided to sue, LOL.

Being that I see more Yankees hats in Chelsea than any other team by a five to one ratio (its two to one in my town in Hudson County), be careful which team you associate with the color pink.

Most Yankee fans are "all man", but most homos and meteros happen to be Yank-off fans, IMHO.

(or SF Giants fans)

No, they are wearing Yankee hats because it is trendy. If the Yanks go cold and the Mets win another WS, the Chelsea boys' club will forget all about The Bronx.

If I was the A's, I would run that promotion again and hand out pink Oakland A's panties to any man that requested them.

This lawyer would get a box full.
