JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRE REPORT

NORTH WILKESBORO - A former teacher in Wilkes County accused of having sex with a student was found dead Sunday, according to a report filed by the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

Stephen George Kennedy, 26, was found dead at 8:35 a.m. in his parent's home. His mother found him hanging by a necktie tied to a bedpost. The death appeared to be self-inflicted, the report said.

In May, Kennedy was called out of class and arrested at North Wilkes High School, where he was working as a substitute teacher. Charges included first-degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a minor.

Kennedy had been a teacher and assistant wrestling coach at North Wilkes Middle School in 2004, when he began a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy, authorities said.

The first encounter was on campus before wrestling practice and the encounters continued at Kennedy's home until shortly before his arrest, authorities said. Ken-nedy had requested a leave of absence last year and had been working off and on as a substitute teacher when he was arrested.

Kennedy had a court date on Sept. 1.

"At least he could have rented out a hotel room instead of letting his mother find him."

I agree with you. No matter his transgressions, he was still her son and I'm sure she loved him.

As a mother, my heart is broken for Kennedy’s Mother. As a nurse, having seen first hand abused children, he has done the world a favor and I cannot say I am sorry.

Hi and welcome to FR. Thank you for your post. I had to search a bit to find my original post as it was almost a year ago, but I remember it now:)

You are right of course about child abuse and abusers. There can be no excuse for their vile behavior toward the innocent. As you suggested, my feelings were based on being a mom myself and the the pain I imagine his mother must have felt on several levels, not the least of which was finding him dead. Poor woman.
