BREAKING NEWS

Axe killer escapes jail

By SUN ONLINE REPORTER

A WOMAN who killed her husband with an axe walked free from court today.

Wadanahalugeder Chandrasekera, 59, of Port Close, Bearsted, Kent, instead received a three-year community order at Woolwich Crown Court.

The court heard she killed her husband Sarath Chandrasekera, 57, with 11 blows of an axe to his head on October 23 last year after discovering he had fathered a child with her niece.

He had moved out of the family home six years earlier and returned that night to visit his son.

The couple’s relationship deteriorated when Mr Chandrasekera moved into a separate bedroom in the early 1990s.

The timing coincided with the arrival of her niece in the UK 15 years ago.

Mother-of-two, Chandrasekera, a health visitor, admitted manslaughter.

She told police she had “snapped” and admitted "I was a crazy woman".

She said after her arrest: "I didn’t mean to but he betrayed me. I found out he’s been having an affair with my niece and they had a baby."

Doctors agreed that, at the time of the killing, she had an abnormality of mind that substantially impaired her responsibility for the action.

Wife who killed husband is freed

Chandrasekera, who was known as Gina, has been freed from jail
A woman who killed her husband with an axe because he had an affair with her niece has been freed by a judge after serving 10 months in prison on remand.

Wadanahalugeder Chandrasekera, 59, of Port Close, in Bearsted, Kent, had admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Woolwich Crown Court heard she had suffered mental abuse at the hands of her 57-year-old husband, Sarath.

She was given a three-year community order on Tuesday.

The couple, who had two children, were separated when Chandrasekera discovered her husband was living with her niece and they had a daughter together.

During one of his visits to the family home in Bearsted on 22 October last year, she struck him 11 times with an axe.

Chandrasekera was originally charged with murder, but her guilty plea to manslaughter was then accepted.

Det Insp Derek Cuss said: "Two psychiatric reports stated that at the time she committed this offence, she was both depressed and desperate.

"This was a tragic and sad case whereby the defendant had been subjected to a number of years of emotional abuse.

"It was a horrific crime and we don't condone that.

"However, there were unique and exceptional circumstances surrounding this incident and I think this was reflected in the judgment."

A statement from the couple's son and daughter - Thusara, 24, and Harshani, 20 - said: "We love both our parents dearly and don't blame anyone for the break-up of the family.

"We did not want to lose another parent [and] we are grateful to the court for releasing our mother."

The judge at Woolwich Crown Court concluded that Chandrasekera had not planned to kill her husband, but said she would have to live the rest of her life with the knowledge that he died at her hands.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

(derived from a line in a poem by William Congreve "The Mourning Bride" [1697] - The complete quote is "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned / Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned." )

To kill a poor defenseless axe should be a crime!

"11 blows of an axe to his head on October 23 last year after discovering he had fathered a child with her niece."

That'll keep his pants zipped in the future.

One more whack and she would've given him one for every syllable in her name.

Shades of Fargo, what no wood chipper?
Side note: probably should be making those axes with a safety.

Talk about misleadig headlines.

And what did she do to/about her niece?

Or is it only the male's fault------don't bother answering, we already know!

Perhaps that may have been part of the intent....even with my comparatively tame real name, I still have to spell it about 3.4 times for everyone I meet.  In addition to the unimaginable pain that her husband gave her as a result of his familial infidelity (incest? I suppose the definition varies culturally), he also gave her a name that would be a really tough one to deal with even in the present UK.  By saying this I don't mean to imply that I'm sympathetic to her...quite the contrary.  We all have crosses to bear in life but most of us don't resort to murder.

Delightful movie, makes me want to visit North Dakota.

You may have heard that there is a move afoot to ban knives with points in the U.K. It appears to be gaining considerable law enforcement support and may come to pass one day, given the history of some other banning efforts in the U.K.
