Video puts Romney in prez mode
The Boston Herald ^ | 08/22/2006 | Kimberly Atkins

He’s not ready to run “Mitt for President” TV ads yet, but Gov. Mitt Romney has already hit the Internet with a video painting him as a hero in the battle of Beacon Hill, a move political watchers say should remove any doubt about his White House ambitions.

Romney’s Commonwealth PAC Web site now features a video of the Republican’s “great American story,” which opens with a victorious Romney standing amid falling election-night confetti.

Then, using not-so-subtle imagery, the video cuts to shots of Boston’s skyline under ominous dark clouds and crackling lightning, and an uphill shot of the State House under stormy skies. In the background, a radio reporter talks about the tremendous budget deficit that awaited Romney when he took office.

The remainder of the video features Romney and supporters, including Harvard Pilgrim head Charlie Baker, Romney’s Bain Capital co-founder Bob White, Union Baptist Church’s the Rev. Jeffrey Brown and Romney’s wife, Ann, testifying to Romney’s pro-family character and touting his health care and budget achievements and firm stance against same-sex marriage.

“He’s obviously preparing pretty well” for a White House run, said Washington-based political analyst David Mark. “He’s not even waiting until he’s out of office. He’s moving full steam ahead.”

There is no mention in the video of Democratic lawmakers’ role in passing the health care reform bill or balancing the budget, a move angering some Democrats. “It was the Democratic Legislature that steered Massachusetts back on track in 2003, thanks to the $3 billion lawmakers had set aside,” said state Democratic Party spokeswoman Cyndi Roy, adding that job growth is down and housing costs are up under Romney’s watch.

State Sen. Mark Montigny (D-New Bedford) said with a laugh, “At least he didn’t take credit for the Internet or inventing Viagra.”

Indexing to RomneyTheRINO

I'd like to see a FR poll testing the 2008 options:

A. Rudy Giuliani
B. John McCain
C. Mitt Romney
D. Someone who isn't a complete hoser

No.

We don't want to nominate someone who will be 'Gored' in his home state.

Are RINOs all we can come up with? If we have to find someone democrats will vote for, the GOP is dead.

Accck! I read the headline quickly, and I THOUGHT it was "Video Puts RUMMY in Prez Mode" and I got all excited, as I'd LOVE for Rumsfeld to run and prove all the pundits who say he's too old, or "stained" by Iraq to win.

Then, I get to the thread and realize it's RINO Romney, and that dork REALLY doesn't have a chnce.

Rudy openly admits he is a social liberal, and I have seen McCain's "independent" side in action. But I don't know that much about Romney. I have heard him speak and he seems like a winner to me. Can you please explain the situations and what he has done to be called a Rino.

Thanks

Me, too! I thought 'Rumsfeld, as if he doesn't have enough enemies'. I would vote for him! That being said, I will probably vote for whoever the Pubbies put up in '08. I will never, ever again vote for a Dim.

Here's my candidate. Even now
he'd make a better president than
any of those RINO losers.

LOL! I did the same thing!

Romney, however, is a formidable candidate. People who are thinking he isn't a serious contender are not paying attention.

But I don't know that much about Romney.

I put up a few links and excepts on my FR homepage.

But in summary:

Romney has no convictions of his own
Thus he's developed a strong record of flip-flopping and pandering
He supports gay rights (gays in Boy Scouts, gay youth government commission, gay benefits, gay non-discrimination) but opposes gay marriage (he was also for civil unions before he was against them)
He supports legal abortion but calls himself pro-life, says his position has never changed but he's in "a new place" on the subject
Supports state and federal Assault Weapons Ban. He's not against guns, he just doesn't want you to have them.
Says he wants good judges, but when choosing judges in Massachusetts he nominated liberal homosexual Democrats who just happened to be pro-gay marriage activists.

Quite possibly. But there's always hope for a Mark Sanford or Tim Pawlenty to ride in and save the day.

Really, with the hosers out there "leading the pack" how hard would it be for a good candidate to break out even with a late start? Pretty easy IMO.

I guess you and I have drunk the Kool Aid.

I think Mitt's a very attractive candidate, very smart, decent, funny and with no nasty skeletons in his closet (so far as I know).

Probably the biggest negative I can muster against him is that, in a pinch, he can be "pragmatic."

I'm not sure that's so terrible. He's certainly a better guy than Massachusetts deserves.

I could vote for him in the primary. BTW, I have a 30 year record of backing losers in the primary...

Everybody has problems, even sanford and pawlenty.

Sanford is squishy on immigration, and Pawlenty ignored FDA rules and imported drugs from canada, not to mention a tax raise.

There is no perfect candidate, everyone is going to bitch about everyone.

I have always thought if Mitt had signed an Executive Order banning ALL marriage in MA until the voters had a chance to vote on the gay "Marriage" question, he would have shown steel in his spine, and propelled him as a true Conservative. But he didn't.

If he was the GOP nominee in 2008, I guess I'd have to vote for him, even though he would get "Gored" here in MA.
