Revived muscle car to save industry jobs
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | August 22, 2006 | Greg Bensinger

General Motors Corp. will save about 2,500 jobs in Oshawa, Ontario, by building a revived Chevrolet Camaro sports car there in two years, the union that represents the workers said.

Production of the 2009 Camaro will begin at the end of 2008 as part of a $662 million investment, the company's Canadian unit said Monday. GM, the world's largest automaker, made the previous Camaro in Ste. Therese, Quebec, until 2002.

Members of the Canadian Auto Workers paved the way for the decision by agreeing in March to concessions that included shorter break times and use of contract employees.

GM said the investment is designed to give the plant flexibility to build a variety of vehicles. The Oshawa plant now makes Buick Lacrosse, Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala cars.

"We are thrilled about this, it means that any job losses will be through attrition, the workers' own decision," Peter Kennedy, a union spokesman, said in an interview. "But this doesn't solve everything. We're hopeful that ($662 million) investment means something else will come in to sustain the business there."

About 100,000 Camaros will be built annually, Kennedy said.

He provided the estimate of jobs saved, from about 6,000 workers at the factory.

The Detroit-based automaker said earlier this month it would bring back the Camaro. GM built the so-called muscle car from 1966 until 2002, when annual sales dwindled to 28,404 from a peak of 260,201 in 1978.

I bought a Camaro LT 305 in 1977. The car was a mechanical and cosmetic Nightmare from day one! Why they are bringing back that beast is beyond me!

I was born in 50, I have a grey beard, but I never underappreciate a fine and fast machine. I have owned 1 Toyota, a datsun, and a Nissan--all were fairly reliable but basic machines that were/are boring to drive. Course, I am a young buck compared to you--ha!

Is that because the radio turned on but the engine didn't? ;-)

Ok, I read the whole thread before posting this.

A Camero is a "muscle car"?? No way!!!!! A muscle car is one the guys like, cos it goes really fast, they can tinker under the hood and soup it up, and they can impress the other guys with it. A girl (back in the day, anyway) would rather drive Dad's pick-up than brother's Charger.

Girls (again, back in the day) loved the Camero and Mustang (some even liked the Firebird..poor things). Why? Because they were so CUTE, they went so FAST, and the boys that drove them were both CUTE and FAST!!!

I agree with another poster, why not bring back the old body styles with improvements...but still make sure the cars go really fast and are really bad on gas...that way when I buy one, I'll use it (and the gas) sparingly, appreciatively.

Camero...muscle car...*snort*!

I had it sold to an 18 year old, he even had bank financing approved, then he found out his insurance payments would be around $300 per month and he backed out.

I finally traded it in and took my beatin' from the dealer.

Hubby is a camaro freak. We have both owned numerous camaro's over the years. I sold my 78 RS a few years back. I just sold my 86Z a few weeks ago. I will never own another one. Nothing but shoddy workmanship and overheating problems with every damn one of them.

Hubby still has his 68, which has been parked now for 13 years. He asked me if he could trade it off on the new one coming out. I said NO. The 68 seems to be the solidest camaro out of all of them we have owned. Maybe back in the 60's they still took pride in their cars. I am sure the new one will just be another hastily put together car, that will be junk in a few years.

I often wondered why some of the Big Three doesn't go back and build the classics with the new technology.

The new tech doesn't fit well with the old bodies and the extra weight and poor aerodynamics would pull down the CAFE. I also wouldn't be surprised if they had problems with crash tests.

Too bad that's Kris Horton's Camaro concept and not the real GM product that's coming.

Paint that shiny crossbar and let that bowtie float on a field of black.

I see you have a 17 year old. That'll do it.

Yes, the boys and girls at GM really screwed up on the GTO. All they had to do was update the 1965,66 or 67 body and they wouldn't have been able to keep them in showrooms. Combine that with a new 400 c.i. motor with perhaps a blower on top of it, a 6-speed Hurst shifter, and some other goodies, and they would have had a screamer on their hands.

But no, GM had to go with that really ugly Australian platform. Geez, the thing looked like a Toyota.
