Weinstein Co. buys Dixie Chicks docu

By Gregg Goldstein

NEW YORK -- Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's politically charged documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" has been picked up for worldwide distribution by the Weinstein Co. A release is tentatively scheduled for the fall, possibly right before the November elections.

The film revolves around the aftermath of singer Natalie Maines' statement at a 2003 London concert, where she said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." It chronicles death threats, political attacks and radio boycotts against the band, and that could make the film a political hot potato as well as potential ammo should longtime Democratic party supporter Harvey Weinstein become involved in the fall political campaigns.

..."I am extremely proud to be associated with this film because it's not only an outstanding and creative piece of work, but it also exposes our responsibility as Americans to confront our fundamental right to freedom of speech," Weinstein said....

When are these people going to realize that "Freedom of Speech" works for everyone? Not just liberals and Democrats!

This is about the most transparent hypocrisy one will ever see.

The Dixie Chicks are still speaking, aren't they?

It just that the rest of us aren't under any obligation to pay them any mind. That's part of our freedom to take off when the DCs show up.

I really amazing how some folks think that freedom of speech means an obligation on the part of others to listen.

Exactly!! I am free not to buy their Cd's or attend their concerts and they are free to suffer the consequences of their bad behavior.

One could only hope.

I don't agree with death threats, but "political attacks" and "radio boycotts" are now depriving of free speech?

Hardly.

The Dixie Chicks can speak all they want - and have.

But not on my dime.

The DChicks have free speech, like everyone else.

We all have freedom of association, too.

This whole Dixie Chicks thing fascinates me: these people think free speech means say anything you want at any time and expect no consequences whatsoever. That speech has no effect and should not result in any actions by those it is directed at.

I actually got into a heated argument about this with a female liberal colleague once and those who observed the exchange later told me they couldn't believe what the person was saying. It's fundamental that there are consequences - positive or negative - to ones actions and ones speech. to expect there not to be is lunacy.

They're free to say whatever they want ... and business' are free to market whatever they chose ... and consumers are free to purchase whatever commodities they'd like ...

Entitlement, huh?

The left has done all it can to prop up the Dixie Chicks, but they failed.

They don't have the awesome power of persuasion that they once had, now that the "new media" is on the playing field.

Balderdash! Had the Chicksies been deprived of free speech, they wouldn't be in their current predicament. It was precisely because they exercised their right to Free Speech that they exposed their political nessage to fans that were anything but receptive. They even went as far as to call their fans names. No, the Chicksies were in desperate need of prior restraint, self-restraint that is, but shot their mouths off anyway. But Free Speech does not include the right to force me to hear it. I have Freedom of Association and I choose not to associate with them. As their current tour proves, I am not alone.

I bet there are hundreds - nay, thousands - of bands out there "having their free speech stifled" by not getting radio play of their music. There should be lawsuits 'a plenty!

Whole lotta free speech stiflin' goin' on out deah!

Let's see - - it must be here inside this amendment somewhere. No, I can't find the "right to be heard."

Try exercising your right to free speech to say something without consequence to her. I bet she'd have you hanging from the rafters by your testicles in legal fees before the week was out.
