In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.
Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."
This news was posted on FR here and here.
It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.
What is your opinion?
El Snako prolly didn't put on a face that ugly.
Of course how can you ever tell the quality of the song if you don't listen?
Parts of the Bible are misogynist, including the verse quoted.
Did I say who made the Sabbath?
In your own words, describe the difference between the soul and the spirit.
Part two, apply that difference in describing spiritual gifts in discernment from soulish talent.
I remember very clearly the first time God spoke to me (not in an audible voice but in a very clear thought). I was at the end of my rope and so very sad. I heard in my spirit, "But I will take care of you, Mary." I never forgot it and I hung on to that for years. It IS real, my FRiend. It changed my life.
God doesn't like boxes and we keep trying to put Him into one. Oh, what fools we mortals be.
Sigh.
True. True.
Another excellent exhortation.
Thanks.
Scripture is scripture, and if the teachings of Jesus Christ should not be questioned regarding the firing of 80 year old Sunday school teachers then why should they be questioned when people pursue an adulterous lifestyles? This paster says women should not be placed in positions over men, period. Jesus said those who divorce and remarry are committing adultery, period. Why is one OK and not the other?
Mercifully, that's been a common refrain from The Father; and our Lord Jesus.
It's amazing to me. I believe every earnest believer has heard God speak in their inner man in His still small voice.
And, every earnest believer has had Holy Spirit highlight with great existential and emotional intensity like fireworks going of within and around one a particular verse or phrase as one read it--pointing out that it was an answer for a current crisis or long anguished question etc.
Yet some have such an investment in making it granite dense, obtuse and impossible for Holy Spirit to do what He was clearly sent to do! Facilitate DIALOGUE between God and man. What does Christ's restoration of what was lost at The Garden mean if it doesn't include dialogue! Sigh.
We could probably call God the ultimate box crusher but He doesn't crush them, He shreds, disintegrates, obliterates them.
Kind of makes me think of a certain kind of bride on her honeymoon.
Hubby is saying . . . Hey, honey, I've had my shower. You've had you're shower . . . uhhhh where are you?
She: "Not yet! I have to consult the honeymoon manual. I have to make sure I've chosxen the right neglige. I have to memorize all the right moves a little longer. I don't have all the chapter and verse references down well enough.
I haven't chosen the right slippers yet. Uhhhhhhh . . . the little box isn't quite tidy enough. I'll be there eventually. I have to check the honeymoon site online to be sure I'm applying the right verse in the right way.
He: Honey! I married YOU! NOT THE HONEYMOON BOOK! PLEASE COME TO BED NOW! Forget the manual. This is not time for the manual. I'M HERE IN THE FLESH . . . ready for true inter course.
Which is what true Spirit led Worship and Dialogue with God is, as Christ inferred.
Isn't there an exception for a spouse who commits adultery on you? I believe so.
It's amazing, isn't it? He longs to speak to His children. What father wouldn't????

AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!
But . . . He has a bit of a problem . . . He can easily overwhelm us.
There is reverence and awe when kowtowing is fitting.
There is dialogue with daddy when scared rabbits are not desired on our end of things. Yet, obedience, humility, submission are prerequisites usually.
Interesting process and . . . dance.

Yeah, and He does things we'd never think He would do which kinda blow the mind and surprise us.
Why is it so hard for people to let God be God?
I think . . . the shrink speaking here . . . that it has to do with folks who are inherently/attachment disorder insecure so much that they MUST, ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE AT LEAST THE IMPRESSION, THE SENSE THAT; THE DELUSION THAT they are at least IN CONTROL of the tidy little box they construe God to reside in.
Oh, they'd never put it that way.
But they are least have to behave in a way and think in a way especially that leaves them feeling that they have a very comprehensive tight grip on what God would and wouldn't do to the nth degree. Only then do they feel safe.
But it's an illusion, even a delusion.
Safety is only IN RELATIONSHIP with God and IN HIS WILL. And even then this boot camp can have some pretty intense 'boot camp survival school' moments, seasons, years.
Letting Go and letting God seems to be such a hard lesson to learn. Folks seem compelled to either maintain a death grip of control on 'doctrine & theology' OR to abandon all responsibility and live and think willy nilly.
But God wants a walking-hand-in-hand-relationship-in-dialogue moment by moment. And even many life long belivers resist that tooth and toenail or run screaming from the prospect the first time God shows up in their lives overtly very intensely at all.
What did Christ die for if not reconciled RELATIONSHIP?
This is called dodging the question. So I'll try a different tact...
Does not your interpretation of the New Testament exclude women not only from the ministry, but also from actively debating church policy and interpreting/ teaching Scripture?
