Poll Results Show Allen Losing Ground (Allen 48%, Webb 45%)
WUSA-TV/SurveyUSA ^ | 8/21/06

Posted on 08/21/2006 3:04:55 PM PDT by DallasJ7

In an election for the United States Senate in Virginia today, 8/21/06, incumbent Republican George Allen edges Democrat challenger James Webb 48% to 45%, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV in Washington, DC.

Since an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6/28/06, Allen has lost 8 points and Webb has gained 8 points. Allen's lead has shrunk from 19 points to 3 points.

Interviewing for this poll began 8/18/06, one week after Allen singled out a Webb campaign worker at an Allen rally. Allen has lost support across all demographic groups, but in particular, among younger voters. He has gone from Plus 23 to Minus 17, a swing of 40 points. In Southeastern VA, Allen has gone from a 2:1 lead to a tie, a 31-point swing.

Those who support Ballot Question 1, defining marriage in Virginia as between one man and one woman, vote for Allen by 39 points. Those who oppose Question 1 vote for Webb by 64 points. The election is in 11 weeks, on 11/7/06.

The Republicans have a 10-seat majority in the U.S. Senate. Allen's seat had been considered safely Republican, and Allen himself had been widely considered to be a Republican candidate for President of the United States in 2008.

Marriage Amendment Passes 2:1. In an election in Virginia today, 8/21/06, Question 1, which amends the Virginia Bill of Rights to define marriage in Virginia as between one man and one woman, passes with 65% "Yes" to 34% "No", according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV Washington DC. Republicans support the Amendment 8:1. Democrats oppose the Amendment 5:4. Independents support it 3:2. 92% of Conservatives vote "Yes." 29% of Liberals vote "Yes." Those who approve of President Bush's job performance support the Amendment 9:1. Those who disapprove of Bush oppose the Amendment. The Amendment is supported by 89% of Allen voters but by only 39% of Webb voters.

The following is the result of what 567 "likely voters" said they would vote:

If the election for United States Senator were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now, who would you vote for? Republican George Allen? Democrat Jim Webb? Independent Green Gail Parker Or some other candidate?

48% Allen (R)

45% Webb (D)

2% Parker (IG)

5% Undecided

Question 1 amends the Virginia Bill of Rights to say the following: that only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. In an election today, would you vote yes or no on Question 1?

65% Yes

34% No

1% Undecided

Except that we DID find WMD in Iraq.

The issue is that Dubya can't make his case. Whether we found WMD is less important than whether most people believe they were found. He doesn't talk about WMD in Iraq anymore, since about 1/2 the population thinks he is talking out of his arse.

Did you hear his response to the NSA ruling the other day? Maddening - rambling, nonsensical, unfocused, and unconvincing. Uninspiring.

I like the guy and voted for him twice, but the next 2 1/2 or so years are going to be very long.

maybe maybe not...

He is doing what needs to be done in the WOT.

Sure it won't appease you Savage fans, but the military loves him. And really after George Allen, there isn't one electable REpublican out there at this time and he needs to win convincingly in his Senate reelection run to keep that.

Besides considering the onslaught of MSM bias against him, he's doing just fine.

Has nothing to do with being a savage fan or if the military loves him. I like the guy. I'm just saying that he hasn't been able to be a convincing leader for much of the last year.

Did you hear him describe our enemy in the war the other day as "an extremist (pause) group of folks."

Yea, that's damn inspiring.

LOL, Savage fan's must be constantly "inspired", or they lose their way!

Maybe Hillary can save them!

I don't need him to scream and yell to tell me who we are facing.

Neither does anyone else and honestly I think he does just fine when describing who and what we are facing.

He doesn't need to be inspiring. We are winning the damn war. He needs to be consistent. He's very consistent and doesn't listen to what the polls say.

And yes it has everything to do with being a Savage fan.

Has nothing to do with screaming. He needs to be consistent and tough, you are right. He also needs to convince people he is right.

Lately, he hasn't been doing that. That's all.

I honestly don't think he cares what people think. A leader makes a decision.

Unlike Clinton, who governed by polls, he doesn't need to have 51% or more of the country on his side to do what he thinks is right. He makes decisions and he sticks to them.

Reagan had the same attribute.

A leader also leads - that is, convinces people he is right. A leader without followers is just an odd fellow.

Last time I checked his popular support, more people won't follow him than will.

Looks like the pollster wanted to show a slip in polls for Allen and attribute it to Allen's failed attempt at humor.

I think on balance the polls are accurate. While any one poll is suspect, if we look at 10 polls taken around the same time and if they all have the same message, I beleive it tells us something meaningful about the electorate.

This neither suits me or doesn't suit me.

I agree. Jim Webb made some stupid anti semitic jokes about Harris Miller that the Liberal Media hid under the carpet. Allen's campaign will seaze on this soon.

Acknowledging that a conservative public official has flaws or has made mistakes does not make one a troll.

Add the OK-05 run-off to the list of races nailed by SurveyUSA. SUSA polled the race at 61% Fallin to 36% Cornett, and the actual results are 63% Fallin to 36% Cornett.
