Dixie Chicks not ready to fill an arena
TwinCities ^ | Sat, Aug. 19, 2006 | ROSS RAIHALA

Presented for your morning chuckle...

When the Dixie Chicks emerged this spring, three years after lead singer Natalie Maines' jabs at President Bush ignited a nationwide controversy, the title of the trio's comeback single said it all: "Not Ready to Make Nice." And in a subsequent series of high-profile interviews, the Chicks defiantly declared they were ready to ditch mainstream country music.

The problem, however, is that in mounting the "Accidents and Accusations" tour, they continued to act like, well, a mainstream country act, planning a full-scale arena romp with the assumption they could instantly replace all those former followers.

Soft ticket sales and more than a dozen canceled shows later, the Chicks pulled into the Twin Cities — one of their strongest markets — for a Friday night gig at the Target Center in front of about 11,300 fans. For those keeping score, that's about a quarter the number that caught the group's pair of sold-out shows at the X in 2003.

I get so sick of the liberal media spin on these gals, that they're being "censored" or "punished for their views." I've worked in radio for decades, and I can assure you that every radio station has a big box of promo records for the staff to take if they want, all sent by hopeful bands begging for a little airtime, and 99% of them never get it. And that's not censorship, it's show business.

The Ditzy Chicks didn't just atack the president on foreign soil as American troops were going into harm's way (we used to call that "treason"), they started acting like whiny, arrogant victims, blaming everyone else for not supporting them. Then they actually turned on their fans, saying they didn't want a bunch of dumb, intolerant hicks like that listening to them. Well, mission accomplished, idiots. You drove away your old audience, and the only reason you sold so many copies of the last album was that Bush haters ran out and got one in the delusional belief that Bush cared. That won't happen a second time.

And memo to the MSM: no matter what your politics, you can't spit on your own fans and expect to remain successful. That holds for everyone (audiences even got sick of Hank Williams and George Jones getting drunk and not showing up at concerts). Again, the Dixie Chicks are not "victims." They're "morons," on the way to being "has-beens." Get your terminology straight.

I'm embarrassed that the Dixie Chicks are from the South.

I'd say the over/under is about two years for their ultimate arrival on the celebrity z-list. Reality show appearances, infomercials, nude photos in Playboy.

Actually, I don't think they will even rate appearances there . . .

They really need a name change. I may be a Yankee, but I feel a southern mans pain at the use of Dixie by these turncoats.

Well, Fatalie is actually from Lubbock so my Mississippi wife makes the argument that she's not from the south. I don't really know. You're thoughts on the subject?

Early on, Maines cracked an odd joke about President Bush not being able to take his Gatorade on Air Force One

Jokes are not "odd" or even, they're either funny or they're not.

With apologies to Spinal Tap, this is the Dixie Chicks future

"Their appeal is becoming more selective," says the band's manager, explaining why the band has been downgraded to performing in increasingly smaller venues, and is forced to endure the cancellation of several shows -- thus proving he suffers from the same degree of denial afflicting the band. And when the group plays the last show of their U.S. tour at a theme park, billed under a puppet show, we realize that the band has sunk just about as low as they can go.

The puppet show is coming, very very soon

"Fatalie" LOL

Well, I'm from Texas and have lived in Atlanta and Nashville for some time. I don't consider Texas to be in the South but consider Texas to be Texan. I don't know why it is often referred to as being in the South other than perhaps a lot of people from the South settled in Texas, it was a state of the Confederacy or it's in the southern part of the U.S., all of which depends on your point of reference.

Oh, BTW, I'm embarrassed that Natalie is from Texas.

You're embarrassed? What about me? I'm from Dallas, and these gals used to play dinner music for us at Joey Tomato's Italian restaurant. Of course, back then, they were a Natalie-free cowgirl quartet and very enjoyable. Sadly, they reached their Peter Principle level of incompetence when they dumped the founders of the band, hired Nat and left the Italian restaurant.

may they crash and burn
If you're referring to their careers, I think that's what they're doing right now. I know you're not referring to their physical beings.

Dixie Chicks not ready to fill an arena

Actually it's their former fans who aren't ready to fill an arena to listen to the fat chicks.

The article mentions that she did make another lame joke about the President. Couple that with their attack on Reba McIntyre and other country singers who stood up proud and tall for America and our troops after the Chicks little overseas spew and you can bet that the country music audience isn't putting up with their tantrums anymore.

I'm convinced that little weasle Johnny Depp was told to "shut the hell up!" by his handlers and the Disney mega-marketers. He started denying the overseas anti-Bush comments that he made and that story sort of just melted away.

From the letters to the editor in the Houston Chronicle this morning:
"Why not be civil?"
For the life of me I cannot understand why, when people exercise their constitutional right to free speech, they're dragged through hell and back as a consequence. If there are consequences to exercising any of our rights as citizens, then we have not rights at all."
"I say, three cheers to the Dixie Chicks for speaking their minds."
"Those people elected to office in this country must earn respect. Even the president. So far, I've been disappointed and I have every right to speak my mind. What I do not deserve is the flogging that happens when someone disagrees with me. What has happened to mutual respect for one another?" Sarah Smith, Houston

What a loon! And a confused one at that!
