Harrison Ford jumps into fray over Hetch Hetchy reservoir
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/20/6 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross

Can Indiana Jones rescue Hetch Hetchy Valley from its watery Temple of Doom?

No sooner did the California Department of Water Resources issue a report concluding it would cost between $3 billion and $10 billion to drain the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and replace San Francisco's water and power supply than never-say-never environmentalists enlisted action hero actor Harrison Ford to their daunting cause.

The 64-year-old Ford flew his own plane into Tuolumne County this past week, then drove to Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite National Park to shoot a bit of added footage and commentary for the 19-minute Environmental Defense documentary, "Discover Hetch Hetchy." The short film, which has already premiered at a Nevada City film festival, also features the likes of former U.S Secretary of Interior Don Hodel and state Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, D-Davis.

Jennifer Witherspoon of Environmental Defense, which has been leading the charge to restore Hetch Hetchy, said Ford was tapped for the role because he is "really dedicated to protecting and restoring important natural places around the world."

But Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, whose 2.4 million customers rely on the Hetch Hetchy for their drinking water, had a very different take on Ford's involvement: "As an actor best known for starring in major fantasy and science fiction movies, appearing in a film about draining the Hetch Hetchy sounds like a role right up his alley."

Is this dude still getting work? If so, where is it?

Last I heard, he married Ally McBeal after a quickie divorce.

God, I hate Hollywood. Die, American aristocracy. Die.

I don't begrudge these people to fight for a cause they believe in. That's better than a hobby. I wish it was a cause I could get behind, but some of them do.

I'm afraid that attacking the messenger again is the most ineffective response here.
The enemy here is the worship of mindless "environmentalism". The mother earth has priority over all other things BS.

Think about the non-sensical foundation for the movement. What makes it possible? Things are too good. Why worry about the killer sandmaggots? The exhaustion of energy sources? The decreasing ability to grow food for an increasing population? The problem of providing basic life support for an increasing number of non-producing or marginally-producing invaders?

Let's focus on our boats, our mountain cabins, our luxury cars, out huge ostentatious houses, our investments. If things get intolerable we can move to Wyoming or Colorado...

Glance at the irrational rhetoric. Every valley, swamp, bog, ridge, mountain, lake, pond, mosquito breeding ground is "unique". Literally. And there's no denying it. The word "unique" can be a valid description for a waste dump.

The word is abused, misused and has been reduced to uselessness.
Sort of like the phrase "peace-loving" when used by the current huge plague upon the earth: muslims.

I am waiting for the obvious solution. Start using the phrases, "Don't be silly"; "Go away"; "come up with an alternative that works, without forcing us back into the pre-industrial age"; Let's revive the human side of the word "humanity": Providing for the next generations is the noblest activity of being human.

Tearing down the accomplishment of our betters, the previous generations that provided for us, hardly seems like the best strategy for a healthy future.

No doubt. Pay me $10 million for 4 months of work and I'll be Joe Squared-away. I'll come to work an hour early every day and work hard at night to memorize and be as prepared as humanly possible. Any of us would.

Ummm. Actually, no.
This particular "cause" would bring down misery to millions, and probably bankrupt them, destroying billions$ of a working infrastructure created over generations.

A self-destructive "hobby" would make tons better sense in this case. Take Mel Gibson; he had the good grace to set out to destroy himself, not an entire metropolitan population.

Ditto. He may be a lefty in the real world, but he's an excellent actor.

WAS excellent. Back when he did movies like "Raiders", "Star Wars", "American Graffiti", "Mosquito Coast" and "Witness", he was a different actor... I think the change came when he did "Clear and Present Danger" which introduced his goodie-two-shoes-self- righteously-preening-Johnny-One-Note character.
