The problem in this country (US) is that not all Muslims are Arabs or Pakistanis, and in fact we have a large number of home-grown blacks who are Muslims (and in fact have been engaged in terrorism, such as the DC snipers, or have been caught in broader terrorist plots with Pakistani Muslims). And of course we also have a number of whites, such as the plump, dreary white girls here in Florida who have started flopping around in their mountains of cloth because they have a prison-Muslim boyfriend.

So profiling is a little trickier than it sounds, since we are not permitted to ask for religious affiliation and they would just lie, anyway.

The good folks in the article didn't profile based on "Middle-Eastern appearance" alone.

Also added were:

1) speaking in Arabic
2) always checking their watches
3) being bundled up in leather despite the heat

And don't try that BS about "it's hotter in the Middle East, they bundle up more in what others would call warm weather".

I live in Phoenix and I still wear shorts when it's in the 60's.

While I see your point. I don't know if anyone here is suggesting that the only security checks should be profiling. I think we should have the profiling and the other checks, like having to go through a metal detector, having to have luggage screened, etc. I know there are problems with these other measures, but I do think they are needed, but with profiling added to them.

Profiling is a tool, not the only tool. By utilizing it with Arabs, you help reduce the pool of those who are most likely to carry out terrorist attacks by rougly a billion people.

Your argument simply shows that racial profiling is inadequate. Religious profiling, on the other hand...

Effective profiling means using multiple sources of information. If we start by tracking any connection to Islam, by anyone in the US, it would give us a very effective starting point for effective profiling.
