The Prime Minister's Office said Saturday afternoon that the commando operation in Wadi village near Baalbek was necessary and not against the ceasefire: "We needed to carry out this operation, and it's good that we did so."
Sources in the office also said, "The operation was necessary because Hizbullah is violating the ceasefire by smuggling Syrian and Iranian arms, which is against the agreement." In the operation, an IDF officer was killed and another two officers were injured, one critically, the other lightly.
The Prime Minister's Office responded to claims made by Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora that Israel's actions represent a breach of the ceasefire: "This does not mean that there isn't a ceasefire.
Hizbullah cannot complain if we are preventing them from smuggling arms, against the terms of the ceasefire agreement. Hizbullah is not upholding the conditions of the ceasefire. This week, a number of incidents occurred in which Hizbullah terrorists shot at IDF soldiers. The operation Friday night was meant to prevent the smuggling of arms from Syria. We are permitted to act upon this when the Lebanese are not doing so."
It was reported to Ynet from the Prime Minister's Office that "the operation was successful. If we hadn't done it, Hizbullah would have done this again and then what would happen? We needed to perform this operation and it is good that we did so."
On the other hand, Meretz Chairman Yossi Beilin charged the minister of defense to clarify what was the intent of the operation initiated by the IDF in Lebanon, and whether or not Israel's intention is to violate the ceasefire.

".....and whether or not Israel's intention is to violate the ceasefire."
The answer to this question can be accomplished with one hyphenated word...self-preservation

Here we go again! Hezzies breaking the cease-fire by trying to smuggle weapons and Israel is being blamed for trying to stop it. Unfreakingbeliveable!
So does anybody have any fun plans for next Tuesday, August 22nd, supposedly the day for the return of the 12th Iman? I'm going home to Texas for a few days and for the first time in my life I'm not looking forward to flying.

Israel needs to get rid of this moronic idiot Olmert as soon as possible. Unless they get their own version of a Ronald Reagan, they are in for many more years of pain & suffering.<p.
As far as what I'm doing on the 22nd, I was thinking about going down to the local "Peace Park" in the evening, saying a little prayer for world peace, lighting a candle, and then burning an Iranian flag and an effigy of Mohamed.

Olmert is thinking this operation will save him from having to resign. It won't. Its well and good Israel acted to interrupt the arms shipment but this operation wouldn't be necessary if Olmert had allowed the IDF to win the War.

My thoughts exactly. He knows his job is on the line and he is window dressing to the Israeli electorate. I really do not think that this is going to work. As usual...

It was necessary, it just wasn't thorough.

Yes, the operation was necessary, but unfortunately the surgeon just cut out part of the cancer and left a lot of it still growing.
As a result of not excising the cancer now, sooner or later, radical chemo- or radiation therapy is likely to be needed.

But it wasn't worth doing right, apparently.

I think I'll be participating in the "End of the World" thread not that that should influence your plans.
Have fun and sweat lots.

Hopefully Olmert is Israel's equivalent of Jimmy Carter. The last and worst of a string of very bad Presidents. Israel has had very poor leaders since Rabin. In the USA the string ran from LBJ to Carter.
