The John Mark Karr story, now heavily into the media groupthink cycle - has entered a predictable phase.
Various busibodies and know-it-alls in the media (yes even Fox News) and the meddlesome groups which hover around the media like pilot fish -- are beginning to circle around allegations of pedophilia in the Kingdom of Thailand.
This poster acknowledges a certain unconcerned libertarianism in Thai society, which frankly is REFRESHING. But the fact is, Thais no more accept pedophilia than any other culture.
In fact, snaring foreign pedophiles makes great press. Thai papers regularly run bits on middle-age European types looking surprized and embarrassed as police burst into their room, cameras flashing.
I admire Thais. The Thai embrace of "sanuk", and the importance of a cool temper, makes Thai society remarkably civil and warm. Thais accept others, and they believe very deeply in individual freedoms.
Narrow-minded American media types, would do well to spend more time there, before trotting out tired old canards about "red light districts" and alleged pedophilia. Then perhaps an in-depth expose on the relative amount of personal freedoms in 2006 America, vs 2006 Thailand.
Go to Thailand. Rent a motorcycle and go see the country. You will learn almost immediately, as you ride your motorcycle carefully on the wrong side of the road; past ancient Wats, without a DOT-approved helmet smothering your senses, a newfound sense of what real freedom feels like.
Stop by a beach, buy a Singha beer from the vendor, and consider the meaning of classical lasse faire as you sit watching the waves, sweltering comfortably in the 110 degree heat. :)
There's very little in American experience like it anymore. Not since the old west.
American lectures are not appropriate. America should learn to be more like Thailand, in this poster's opinion.
Fewer lawyers. Fewer laws. And a lot less sanctimony.
Mai pen arai.
Thailand is a tourist destination for men who want to have sex with children. Not many nations have that kind of industry as a tourism draw.
One thing you will find is that virtually none of these people have ever been to Thailand. Next they will accuse you of being a pedophile.
How amoral and/or desperate must a guy be to stalk underage girls or boys in SE Asia?
Gosh, oh-golly-gee-whiz, s. Me too! Oh, woe is me!
Thailand's Sex Trade Flourishes POSTED: 5:50 am EDT August 17, 2006Hey, maybe the "refreshing" "libertarianism" of the child sex-trade in Thailand has changed in the last two days.BANGKOK -- It's a photo that has become a staple in the tabloids of Southeast Asia: the foreigner taken in by police after being caught in bed with a local boy or girl.
For many of the region's countries which derive huge sums of money from the tourism trade, it's a vivid illustration of its seamiest side -- child sexual exploitation.
Well, since we put all those misunderstandings about Thailand and libertarians to rest, let's get to work Butternut:
I propose (with the help of our libertarian friends) to increase spending and power for the War on Drugs. We must also (with the help of our libertarian allies) raise the age of consent to 18 -- or at the very least 17+2. Internet porn must be completely filtered out of public schools, libraries, and all other avenues of influence to children. And they will help us educate the world to the dangers of drug abuse. Prostitution will become illegal again in Nevada and Holland. And finally, child pornography and child sex trade will be stamped out.
It won't solve all the world's problems but it will put a nice sized dent in a few nasty ones. Maybe one day our country will be as great as Thailand. Hell, maybe we can even reintroduce a powerful monarchy like Thailand.
No no no--the thread's vanity states that Thailand is no different than any other country in its dislike of pedophilia. Therefore, when we walk out our doors and drive down the streets we should be able to imagine our towns, cities, states, and regions of the US as moral parallel to the streets and canals of Bangkok.
LOLOLOL, s!
You are wasting your time. You should have seen the threads when Phuket got hit by the tsunami. They were literally celebrating.
One thing you will find is that virtually none of these people have ever been to Thailand. Next they will accuse you of being a pedophile.

ROFL. You're about right.
I think I completely misunderestimated this forum.
In my simplistic view of the world, FR = patriotic freedom loving Americans, many of whom come from a military background.
Probably accurate.
My fundamental mistake was in concluding this meant freedom from strictly enforced helmet laws, freedom from strictly enforced seatbelt laws, freedom from money-grubbing lawyer driven meddlesome nanny state goverment, freedom to live how one chooses, and (horror of horrors) freedom to have fun.
You know, as in "R & R".
Hello?...
Nowhere did I even HINT at any excusing of pedophilia.
I oppose that 100%, as does any reasonable person.
So, my point was, do Thais.
What I find so intriguing about Thailand is they've managed to thrive as a society for so much longer than America has even existed, and have somehow resisted the spiral into ever more regulations and laws - which threatens to digest what used to be our freedoms, from the inside. Like some societal Ebola virus. All for the sickeningly dishonest mantra "if even one life could be saved".
WE ARE LOSING OUR FREEDOMS.
Nobody really seems to give a hoot - as long as the freedoms we lose are the ones their side wants to eliminate.
So it goes. For eight years one side governs, and systematically eliminates one set of freedoms.
The following eight years, the other side governs. Of course we don't get any of the freedoms we lost the previous eight years back. But sure as the sun rises every morning in the east - we lose a new bunch, a little more every day.
This continues, without pause.
We have who, elected, representing our interests in Washington?
"Lawmakers".
Great. A bunch of know-it-alls, paid by us, who spend their days making more rules telling us what we CANNOT DO.
It's stupid.
The freedom to prey on kids.
(aaaargh)

Unless of course you like the Federal government dictating things like seat belt use, helmet use, the amount of water your toilet can consume...

Auditing with an E-Meter?
No thanks.
