Prayers for my Dad
8/19/06 | 3catsanadog

My Dad is in the hospital now. He's 88 and has been in a nursing home for about 3 years and assisted living about 3 years before that. He had a stroke in 1998 that incapacitated him - no use of right side.

He has had many trips to the hospital over these years for various complications of stroke, vascular disease, CPOD.

He was sent to the hospital Sunday for asperation pneumonia. He seemed to be doing better Monday and Tuesday. But Wednesday got weak and now he's back on a non-breather oxygen aparatus. His breathing is very labored. They have the oxygen up to 15.

I spent all day and all night with him yesterday. I had to come home finally to get some rest.

My heart aches watching him labor for air. He still tries to smile at me and Sis and has this look of fear and wondering in his eyes. I hate to see him suffer.

I keep praying that God will work his perfect will with Dad. Dad is a great American - served in the Army (Big Red 1) in WWII, married the gal he left behind went he went in and stay married to her till she died in 1991. Raised 2 daughters who are lucky to have him for a dad.

I know what you're going through...and what you're about to go through...stay with him as much as you can and say EVERYTHING you want to say. Leave nothing unsaid.

Rest and know that God is with your father. I pray for you as well as your father - it would be a lonely road to travel were it not for the Angels...

you are an Angel.

I can relate because I am going through a similar thing with my Dad right now. I'm taking him out of the hospital Monday to a rehab, but I'm not sure how much better he can get. It is a very stressful time when there isn't much you can do, and meanwhile the rest of the world is pulling you in so many directions to go back to work and such.

Prayers that things will work out for you with God's help.

You have said so much in one paragraph. Prayers here for God's mercy and perfect healing upon your heart. Your father is a lucky man two have such a one as you.

Shalom, W

My heart goes out to you, and to anyone watching an elderly parent going through an illness. It's agonizing. But try to remember what a long and wonderful life your father has enjoyed, and keep those memories foremost in your mind. We can't change whatever plans the good Lord has, but we can be grateful for the great times we've shared with our parents. God bless, and prayers for your dad, who sounds like a wonderful, loving person.

Thank you so much everyone. I feel like Free Republic is my family also.

I know what you mean about the world pulling at you - everyone says to take care of yourself and then won't let you. Fortunately I work at the hospital he's at. I'm supposed to go work from 3-7 today. I'll be in to see him soon and then will decide if I should work or not. It's one thing to be down the hall helping patients to the bathroom and then get called to him. It's quite another to be there with your Dad, holding his hand if it's time for him to go home with the Lord and Mum.

I know how painful it is to see age and illness take its toll with those who have been lifelong symbols of strength. Prayers for your family.
