Shiraz, Fars Prov, Aug 19, IRNA -- The Islamic Society of University Students opened its 8th national congress in this southern city Saturday with an inaugural message from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

In an inaugural ceremony, the Supreme Leader's message to the congress was read for him by the representative of the Vali-ye Faqih (religiousjurisprudent) in universities.

"Dear university students! I hereby greet you one by one and pray that God Almighty would grant you a more prosperous and dignified future thanks to your efforts, hopeful hearts and increasing joyfulness.

"Today, you are the replica of the country's future. The future of this country, which has seen enlightenment by embracing science and faith, lies in the research activities and deep thinking of this country's youth accompanied by faith, moral uprightness, a revolutionary spirit and hard work.

"In the future that we anticipate, the dark forces of ignorance, cruelty and injustice have been wiped out," the Supreme Leader said in his message.

He further advised the youth to "go through this unprecedented period with diligence and a sense of direction," adding "God will help you all."

After the reading of the message and inaugural ceremony, members of the congress held a session to reflect on and discuss the message.

Am I the only one who gets that 'deja vu' Munich games Luftwaffe overflights 1939 feeling?

Or is this just a smokescreen for going after the Kurds?

rapid reaction units enjoying high combat spirit

Wait'll they get their first taste of a battlefield filled with MOABs, cluster bombs, and precision artillery, and cities under siege. Let 'em eat their dead.

"All hints and suggestions very welcome."

RFE/RL or VOA should sponsor/create a meta-site for the Iranian bloggers since they are being shut down and satellite dishes are being confiscated. It would have to be sponsored by the US since private sites or different opposition sites would tend to compete with each other and dilute the effect. It would be a magnet/central news site for information that might start to unify perceptions and positions since there is no serious unity among the opposition that is apparent at this point - - none anyway that will make enough difference in enough time.

Most young Iranians probably have not yet internalized the fact that their leadership has now set them on course for apocalyptic national suicide. They are being volunteered for martyrdom by a suicidal leadership and many if not most Iranians now unwittingly live with a death sentence hanging over their heads created by their religiously fanatical clerical government.

I'd imagine they would have something to say about that once that becomes clear to them. Right now they cannot fully see or say what they wish and they see and say less by the day. That can be changed with some thought.

That's my two cents.
