Interrogations of suspects in Pakistan lead its investigators to believe that the alleged plot to blow up US-bound jetliners was sanctioned by the Al-Qaeda leadership, a senior intelligence official said on Thursday.

Almost lost in this story is the arrest of Rashid Rauf. This was a Big Big Fish in the Al-Queda network and its being reported that he knows the location of terror cells abroad, including in the U.S. It looks like some of those arrested in the terror plot are singing like a canary.
