I thought I knew all the rules of common courtesy, but then I moved to Texas and found a concept I'd never been introduced to:

Upon exiting an elevator, allow the woman/women to exit first, no matter what their order of entry was into the elevator. If they are at the back of the elevator, stand to the side. Block the door open with your arm, if necessary.

I like the manners in Texas; it reminds me of California back in the '60s. The 1860s, that is.

"Upon exiting an elevator, allow the woman/women to exit first, "

The elevator icebreaker I use is "OK everyone, please observe proper elevator behavior, eyes forward and no talking".

I've yet not to get a snicker.

That's not jsut Texas, that's just manners. I've lived in CA most of my life and I do that (see above)

Men do that here in Atlanta too, and if they elevator is full they hold the door so it won't start closing on anybody. Remember to say thank you, ladies. We appreciate gentlemen with lovely manners.

Me, too.

Most Texas men are gentlemen and we Texas ladies appreciate it.

Thanks, guys.

I live in California, and I always let women exit the elevator first. I've never lived in Texas, and I don't remember specifically being taught that, but somehow I do it.

Everyone here still has guns.

An armed society is a polite one.

I've done this for whoever was in the elevator with me, I don't see this as a gender based courtesy either. Both people in an elevator, or arriving at a doorway, should attempt to defer to the other. If it's then offered for you to go first, then accept it and go! It's like the courtesy grab for the check at a meal with a friend. Everyone should do this.

Yeah, I think I would have fit in a bit better back then...

I'm from Alabama, I didn't know there was any other way.....

Alternate post: "I'm from Alabama, what's an elevator?"

We Texans also have the death penalty - and we use it! Just like in the 1860s. Another part of modern chivalry lost on most of the rest of the country - protecting our wimmenfolk from low-life varmints who might interfere with their enjoyment of life.

Yes, and some of us in Texas were also taught that it is rude for a man to wear a hat indoors. Even if it's a ball cap, take the darn thing off when you come inside. Sometimes I feel like walking around the restaurant knocking caps off of heads and into laps. Why don't people teach their children manners anymore?

While I'm on a tear, don't hold your fork like it's a shovel, and sit up straight. I can't stand to see people who lean over, put their face a couple of inches above their plate, and shovel the food into their mouth. If I am capable of using good manners while eating MREs on a battlefield, why can't these people exhibit a slight grasp of the concept of good manners when eating in restaurants?
