And GQ is no more a "Man's" Magazine than SNL is funny, either.

They just dont make it like they used to.

............Oh, but you certainly should open doors for women: "Why? To be nice, you mannerless ape!"................

Yep,

It's a wonderful experience to hold the door open for about five or so women, some of whom say "thank you,"
and then, be totally ignored by the same five or so women in the line ahead of you buying coffee, tickets, depositing checks, or whatever!

The Thai folk I've been around have and appreciate excellent manners.

We have many exchange students at my alma mater from Thailand. I agree; they're a good bunch.

It was the station door at Pentagon City. (and she could have been tipped off by the cow manure on my pant cuff)

Bunk. If I had a guy do this, I'd love it. I might not take him up on it but if I was tired enough or my shoes weren't that comfy (unlike most men's shoes), I'd sure be happy.

As an aside, when I was pregnant 30 years ago, I rode the bus/train to work. The men would be seated and they would pretend they didn't see me. I could always tell which ones too because I'd see them glance up and quickly look away like I was blind or something. 9 times out of 10 women got up for me. They KNEW how uncomfortable it could be. Some men are just selfish creeps; oops, I mean, a lot of men.

Most Texas men are gentlemen and we Texas ladies appreciate it.

I agree. Strength and feminity are not mutually exclusive. I've been on my own for quite a while now and am very independent, but I appreciate and respect a man who opens doors for me, helps me carry things to my car and does all of those other wonderful gentlemanly things.

Texan men excell at recongizing and respecting a woman's strength but also understanding that we admire chivalry and good manners.

In my opionion, everyone should be courteous and chivalrous to all people, whatever their gender. It sure would be a nicer world out there.

Great point, I try to practice that.

I can't tell you how many time's I've seen men give up their seats on the DC metro for a pretty young woman...she always seems to appreciate it too.

What a load of crap.

I'll never forget the daggers that came out of her eyes.
Just one of many episodes that caused me to date Asians.

Four of my college buddies ended up with wives from Japan, a fifth one married
a Phillipina.

After one too many experiences like yours.

I can't think of the last time I used public transportation where a man could get up and offer me his seat.

Unless the woman's considerably older than me, pregnant or otherwise handicapped, she can stand.

When my boys were little I taught them to open doors for people....

When I was little, say adolescent, my Mom used to make us hold doors for her. We'd be going to the department store, for example, and she would just stop dead in her tracks in front of the door. At first we were like, "what?" but then we'd figure out that she expected us to open it for her.

People should be chivalrous to each other, not just men to women! I am a woman, and I hold the door for whoever is coming behind me coming in! Man, woman, child, dog.

I don't ride public transportation often, but I would only offer a seat to someone who was elderly or injured or looked like they needed it, or maybe someone wearing unsensible shoes :~)

It's not necessary to offer your seat to someone in hiking boots or tennis shoes, should be the rule.

Nonsense! And people wonder why Europeans say Americans have no manners. Must be because people like these, don't.

Actually, I kind of disagree.

I'm talking manners in general, not chivalrous behavior. I agree that true chivalrous offerings are somewhat a priori. I'll give half the credit for chivalrous behavior to an innate sense to protect, and the other half to just wanting to get catch the girl.
