Bill Clinton to Headline Webb Fundraiser - A former Clinton critic, Webb is now seeking his support
Washington Post ^ | August 16, 2006 | Robert Barnes

Political friendships, and political animus, apparently are not made to last.

Six years ago, former Reagan Navy secretary James Webb was a Republican, and he opined that President Bill Clinton's administration was "the most corrupt administration in modern memory." He made the comments at a news conference endorsing Republican George F. Allen for the Senate, and renouncing his past support of Virginia Democratic Sen. Charles S. Robb.

Today, Webb is a Democrat, running against the incumbent Allen. And Webb's campaign said last night that Clinton has agreed to headline a fundraiser for Webb this fall at -- just to complete the circle -- Robb's house in McLean.

Bygones are bygones, apparently.

"I think he has said it was a different time when he made those comments," said Webb communications director Kristian Denny Todd. "It was a very different situation."

Todd said that Clinton and Webb have not met, but that she believes Webb's rough assessment of the Clinton years was discussed when Webb met with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) "I wasn't in the room, but it seemed to be addressed and done," she said, adding that Sen. Clinton had offered her help as well.

Even a man as famously forgiving as Clinton must have paused over some of Webb's denunciations, which came as recently as 2001, when Clinton was leaving office. "It is a pleasurable experience to watch Bill Clinton finally being judged, even by his own party, for the ethical fraudulence that has characterized his entire political career," Webb wrote in the Wall Street Journal that year.

Webb has not fully explained what he meant when he said the Clinton administration was "corrupt,'' but the decorated Vietnam veteran said his anger was driven by the actions Clinton employed to avoid military service.

"My comments about the Clinton administration...

There is also a rumored suspicion that John McCain, Jim Webb's buddy, had encouraged Webb to take on Allen. Can't be proven, it's just out there.

McCain did a good job for Allen campaigning the other evening but the rumor persists.

except Bill's help never helps...LOL

Yea, i saw that rumor. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was true. Send his buddy in to derail what is likely to be his primary competition. Now that mccain beleives allen is too bogged down to run for president he's setting his sights on his secondary concern, romney. You've got a bunch of pro mccain bloggers out there trashing romney and mccain's even got paid bloggers trashing romney. He's doing quite a job, gotta hand it to him.

I should add that if mccain can derail both allen and romney, it just becomes him and rudy. Between him and rudy i think mccain would probably eek it out.

The Former Jim Webb on Clinton:

"These acts resonate when one evaluates Bill Clinton's incessantly arrogant presidency, from the endless string of conscious and serious abuses of power to the "conversion" of White House furniture and china on his way out the door. For what we are seeing are the echoes of a pervasive elitism, from people who were taught when young that the laws that applied to their countrymen did not necessarily apply to them.

As one who shares Mr. Clinton's ethnic background, and whose family was not afforded the opportunity for higher education until this generation, it is irritating beyond words to see commentators repeatedly refer to his actions as "redneck" or typical of "white trash" behavior. Rednecks might hang a velvet picture of Elvis on their living room wall, but precious few would tolerate any sort of conduct that might demean the greatness of their country, much less take part in it. Check the casualty lists in any war. See who stands tall and salutes when the flag passes by. Note who wasn't sleeping in Lincoln's bedroom when Bill Clinton occupied the White House."

Yeah, it was time when Webb may have had some principles. Sadly, it appears that is no longer the case. This is pathetic.

Well, i think in the day and age of talk radio and the blogosphere a dark horse is highly unlikely. Given the state of fundraising /etc. legitimate candidates need to take steps to run years ahead of time. Plus we can look into all the governorships and senators and evaluate whose presidential material and whose not. THis just wasnt possible back in the day.

Yes. On purpose. Reviving old threads that contain valuable information on the Clinton Administration and Hillary’s involvement.

We do have short memories, and the archive here on FR is a wonderful resource.
