IRAN PREPARES NEW MISSILE TESTS
adnkronos (Italy) ^ | August 18, 2006

Tehran, 18 August (AKI) - Iranian state television has announced that Iran will begin new missile tests on Saturday in five different border regions including along the frontier with Afghanistan. The tests - which will last five days - appear to be a show of strength staged to impress ethnic minorities living in Iran's Kurdistan, Baluchistan and Khorasan provinces

"These manoeuvres serve to re-elavorate the defence doctrine of our nation," said General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, of the Pasdaran revolutionary guards who will be conducting the tests.

One other log to throw on the fire - Syria moving the mines lining the border with the Golan Heights.

I'd class that as "moving ahead regardless," as I strongly suspect that the Syrians' initial plans were predicated on being able to follow in the wake of a large distraction in the form of a massive barrage of Hezbollah rockets.

The IDF's strong response to Hezbollah was strongly out of character for the type of provocation cited. I suspect they had reasons (such as the above) for entering Lebanon in force.

I think Israels move into lebanon was calculated by Iran to probe Israeli defenses.

Gotta disagree again. There's no way Iran would have scripted something like that. They're reported to be furious at Hezbollah for pissing away the missiles and infrastructure that Iran has been helping them to assemble for at least a decade.

I hope the big news on 22 Aug is that Murkowski won the R primary in Alaska. But, I have checked the dog food and there is enough to keep the mutt fat and happy until I run out of Spam.

you should eat the mutt first, then the Spam, then you can work on the dog food you would have fed the mutt.

mutt is very tasty in thai stir-fry dishes -- make sure you use lots of garlic and chile peppers.

What about this? Bad guys (i.e Iran by way of Syria) try to take the Golan Heights this weekend. If they succeed, all of Israel is in range for whatever they have planned on Tuesday.

A three-year old child could connect the dots (quick -- someone get Europe a three-year old child).

Sure. But the trick is figuring how not to respond like a three-year old child -- which is how I characterize the platform of the "nuke-em now" crowd, among others.

Assuming Israel is the only target. I agree that it's a major one, but our presence in Iraq is far more troublesome for the mullahs. Any moves against Israel would also include moves against our folks in Iraq.

We should also not forget Ahneedajihad's pal, Kim Jong Il. It's a pretty good bet that he'd think seriously about acting up once he sees our attention turned to Iran.

In fact, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that they've worked out a plan to act in concert.

I agree, and on some other threads we've talked about this - American in Tokyo posted a mind-blowing chart from the Japanese media that demonstrates that whenever Kim Jong Il goes undercover for an extended period, something bad happens.

This Tuesday will mark the longest period he has ever been out of sight.

Also, it is very troubling indeed that Iran can't get to the front lines in Israel on the ground without getting through our guys in Iraq first. Which lends credence to the theory that 1) Iran is part of a bigger picture; and 2) their bomb may be in the temporary care of a third-party.

I agree - they are being as provocative as possible.
It seems very deliberate and way too easy.

I think the foiled bombings in the UK were to be the start of this. Deadly diversion.

Yes. That's what I have been thinking. And worrying about another thing too. There used to be an islamic Bosnian on FR who posted that the islamofascists loved the tet offensive.

Diversions. They like lots of movement and activity all at once when it comes to attacks.

"There's no way Iran would have scripted something like that."

Why?

If anything, the Hezzies still have thousands of rockets, Iran is getting ready for a military exercise in a place with the narrowest distance between itself and Syria, they are bombing Kurdish rebels in Northern Iraq which is in a direct line from Iran to Syria, they have shiites in the south causing problems and the Lebanese military just took control of southern lebanon, which I am going to bet isn't going to stop the Hezzies from doing anything.

If I was going to script an Iranian attack on Israel, this would be the way to do it.

These guys have all been globe trotting visiting with each other the last few months -- including lil' Hugo. I hope we can walk and chew gum at the same time.

FWIW, I've been reconciling to our way of life coming to an end since the end of March.

Why?

Because now the surprise is blown, and Hezbollah no longer has any forward presence in Lebanon. Iran is crazy, but not stupid.

I seriously doubt that Iran predicted the IDF response to the relatively minor provocations Hezbollah provided.

Theoreticlly, this could be a major Cluster F for the US both diplomatically and militarily.

Tet Offensive. We'll beat them back everywhere, but just the fact that they tried will be enough for the NYT to say we're losing. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the rats know about this as well. Could be some kind of play here stateside, if they're trying a GF1 sort of gambit.

I don't think Iran expected Israels response either. But then again, I don't think they were looking for that.

I think they were looking for the UN to get a Lebanese force in place to assist the Hezzies with resupply and a buffer against Israel. Now, if Israel goes back into Lebanon, they will have to deal with the Lebanese army who will say that they are being attacked by Israel and this will be Iran's and Syrias excuse to join a war.

There is a lot going on here.
