Fire rips through Islamic Center near San Diego

EL CAJON

A fire ripped through an Islamic center early Thursday morning, causing $2 million in damages before it was put out, officials said.

The three-alarm fire at the Kurdish Community Islamic Center was reported just after 2 a.m. and burned for more than an hour before firefighters from 15 different crews extinguished it, said Monica Zech, a spokeswoman for the El Cajon Fire Department.

"When they got here, there was heavy smoke coming from the building and then the fire broke through the roof and flames were shooting through the roof," Zech said. "It's pretty much a total loss."

The cause of the fire in this east San Diego suburb was unknown. Investigators were unable to search for clues inside the building because it was unstable, Zech said. Instead, they used fire truck ladders to get an aerial view of the inside of the 800,000-square-foot community center, she said.

Arson investigators from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI were on the scene.

The FBI would become involved if it was determined that the fire was a hate crime, Zech said.

Members of the community center arrived early Thursday for morning prayer, only to find the center in ashes. Zech said the center's owner was out of town.

Now the mosque members say they are disheartened to learn that Al-Bayoumi, 44, may have been an advance man who helped set up a terrorist cell in San Diego.

"Disheartened"? They're DISHEARTENED?? If I found out my Lutheran pastor was "an advance man for a terrorist cell," I'd be ENRAGED, and would be the first one to turn him in!

That's one down! May they ALL follow, in the same manner, or by any other means necessary to rid America of this pond scum!

I'll bet some of their Mohammedan "bruthas" had it in for the Kurdish Muslims. Some hate the Kurds in Iraq. I'll bet Muzzies did it

"In my opinion, any comments suggesting that it's a good idea to burn down Islamic centers or mosques should be removed from the thread. That attitude is reducing ourselves to the same level as radical Muslims."

I agree. We are better than this, or so I had hoped.

It's as if the word "Islamic" in a headline results in immediate brain-lock.

Same here. Their Muslim rivals torched the place. My take at least

Forty-five firefighters with four ladder trucks battled the blaze from the outside because it was burning too intensely to go inside...

I'm sure that was why they didn't want to go inside. There wasn't any possibility that armaments and explosives were stored there, LOL.

The owner is not nearby so there is an established alibi...

Oh please, use big words. Begin by explaining how the crime of (possible) arson is mitigated by the religious preference of the victims, and the fact that it results in no injuries. Let's test your idea of moral mathematics.

"The FBI would become involved if it was determined that the fire was a hate crime, "
why do the police never say "hate crime" when it's a church or a synagogue?

"The FBI would become involved if it was determined that the fire was a hate crime, Zech said. "

What utter PC Horse-shiite, you wouldn't see this immediate FBI response for any other denomination.

Reuters should photoshop that Lebanese bomb magnet woman into that picture and have her wailing about the plight of the poor American muslims.

Apparently, your memory doesn't go back far enough to remember the alleged "epidemic" of (black) church burnings in the South, and the way it was treated as a political football by a certain President who should not be named.
