Woman In Logan Airport Incident Identified
CBS 4 Boston ^ | 8/17/06

(CBS4) BOSTON Criminal charges could be filed Thursday against a Vermont woman who caused a disturbance aboard a London-to-Virginia jet that was diverted to Logan Airport.

59-year-old Catherine Mayo is being held by federal authorities in Boston.

Investigators say she was a claustrophobic passenger who became upset and interfered with the flight crew on United Airlines flight 923 Wednesday morning. The pilot declared an in-flight emergency and landed the plane at Logan. The Boeing 767 was escorted by two F-15 jets based out of Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod.

Passengers say Mayo paced the aisles and peppered her incoherent mutterings with the word "Pakistan." They said two plainclothes men on board and flight attendants tackled the woman. She was handcuffed while the flight was diverted.

After a day filled with conflicting reports about what she was carrying, an FBI spokeswoman confirmed Mayo had a screwdriver, lighters and matches when she was subdued...

That's probably a 20 year old picture.

I would guess you are correct. I've heard that Mayo doesn't age well.

FYI, I remember that line from the TV series MASH. Sidney Freedman was the psychiatrist who was a recurring character. He used that line in an early episode, and then again in the final episode of the series, when he was treating Hawkeye Pierce.

Wow, thanks!

I never was able to watch MASH, with the execrable Alan Alda.

I'm wondering if that quote --"'Ladies and Gentleman take my advice. Sometimes you have to just pull down your pants and slide on the ice'---Dr. Sydney Freedman" -- was appended by Ms. Mayo herself?

On the one hand, it doesn't seem to part of the body of her letter. OTOH, I don't see it used elsewhere on "Smirking Chimp's" site.

Am going to try to find and link the article that states Ms. Mayo threatened to pull down her sweatpants and "do it in the aisle."

"Feeling sorry for myself, I put on a CD of really old music. Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Genesis."

Yep, that picture is at least 20 years old.

So this psycho-witch defines pretty much everything under the sun as "fascist" if it doesn't meet her leftie standard of moonbat ravings. I wouldn't be surprised if she turns out to have had a psychotic break on that airplane, because judging from the website she has already been sliding into leftwing psychosis for awhile......

Indeed it is almost certainly her. People tend not to replace their posted photos frequently when aging (particulalry if they are aging under the Pakistani sun and getting sugar highs from drinking coke after coke).

I was in Vermont on 9/11, listening to Vermont Public Radio, and I heard my fellow Americans come to the conclusion by the end of the day that they were a vulnerable people not equal to the task. They were going to crawl into their homes and hide. I was horrified by this, I had never heard Americans talk this way before.

I don't know who these people in Vermont were that she was talking about, but she makes a big mistake to take the reponse she saw in her little corner of Vermont(even though this was probably all in her twisted mind) and then say that ALL AMERICANS felt that way.

Most of the good people in Louisiana, where I was on 9/11, weren't thinking of crawling in their homes and hiding, they wanted to go out and kick some ASS!

Here's one article that mentions it:

Passengers said the woman appeared to have emotional problems.

Several passengers said Mayo made repeated trips to the bathroom.

"She was in a frenzy," passenger Martin Drinkwater of London told The Boston Globe. "She then pulled her trousers and knickers down and squatted on the floor."

Antony Nash, 31, of San Diego, said he grew nervous watching the petite woman in a jogging suit seated near him in the back of the plane. She was muttering, pacing, and making too many trips to the bathroom, he said. The pilot did not make a general announcement to passengers of what was happening.

From the looks of her hair and the tenor of her politics, I would say that's likely. Lefties do tend to be hygienically-challenged.

Very good work, shhrubbery!. I think you've uncovered the right nutcase, a big puzzle piece. I had to search several reports before even finding mention of her name. History led me to believe that 1. she must be a lib ( given that she is a "Vermonter" that was no big stretch) 2. She must either be, A. muslim, or B. a reporter. LOL

Interestingly, the great investigative reporters at the, formerly venerable Gray Lady /sar, NYT omitted her name, her profession and her base of operation. NYT

The Guardian did not publish her name but did reveal where her travel had originated...

"Last night Mitt Romney, the governor of Massachusetts, said that only matches and a gelatin-like substance had been found in a search of the woman's bag. One TSA official said the items had not been the cause of the incident, or the rerouting of the flight. The woman was from Vermont, it was reported, and her journey had originated in Dubai, connecting in London."

OK, y'all, check this out:
"'All of a sudden, she started mouthing obscenities and pulled down her trousers,' Mr. Drinkwater [!] [a fellow passenger] said, saying the woman threatened to relieve herself on the floor. At that point, he said, two male passengers subdued her, and a flight attendant handcuffed her and placed her in the last row of the aircraft." [source: New York Times: Unruly Passenger Causes Diversion of a Flight From London ... all emphasis mine, shrub]

Now check the quote appended to Ms. Mayo's letter to Senator Byrd:

"'Ladies and Gentleman take my advice. Sometimes you have to just pull down your pants and slide on the ice'---Dr. Sydney Freedman"

Also, the BBC articles noted that she made the connection for the Heathrow flight from DUBAI...

I bet we'll find her connecting flight to Dubai was from Pakistan.

And it's now been confirmed by named FBI officials that she had at least 3 out of the original 4 items discussed (matches/lighters, screwdriver, and hand lotion/gelatin-like substance). All we're missing is absolute confirmation on the alleged notes about A.Q. (but we got confirmed Pakistan ravings instead, a pretty good swap).

I agree, but it still does not quite explain the screwdriver, vaseline, and matchbook combo in the plane lavatory. Whatever it was that she had planned in her confused mental state, she's not going to be writing about it for some time...
