A creature that was found dead after apparently being hit by a car in Turner, Maine, is shown Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006. For the past 15 years, residents across Androscoggin County have reported seeing and hearing a mysterious animal with chilling monstrous cries and eyes that glow in the night. Now, residents are wondering if the animal found dead over the weekend may be the mysterious creature that has mauled dogs, frightened residents and been the subject of local legend for half a generation. There are all kinds of wild dogs running about central Maine, and have been for decades. I've always understood these to be wild domestics, but who knows, and who knows after years of roaming and mixing what can come up. They're very agressive and very loud at night. Rare, but eerie to hear the howls across the lakes. Usually, and thankfully, it's just the loons.
We're getting wildlife back that disappeared long ago. The beavers, otters, and loons are no longer afraid of people, and the bald eagles have been moving back in. Love it when the loons announce an eagle. They only howl like that if scared off a nest or at the approach of a landing airplane -- or the eagles.
