GARTH TURNER NEWS RELEASE - AUGUST 15, 2006
Religious Right Targets Garth Turner Aims to defeat outspoken MP in riding nomination over gay marriage
Opponents of same-sex marriage are targeting outspoken Halton MP Garth Turner for defeat in a Conservative nomination battle set for next month. Members of religious groups held one organizational meeting in Milton this week and are seeking a candidate to oppose Turner and who would vote to open the divisive marriage issue.
"I can't say I am surprised by this," Turner says, "since I have been critical for months of those in the Righteous Right who I believe are intolerant and want to impose their moral code. I am quite convinced the majority of people in Halton do not want to debate gay marriage, but that doesn't mean this group - if it is well organized - can't scoop off the Conservative nomination."
Under party rules, the Conservative candidate for the next federal election will be selected at a meeting set for Monday, September 11th. Challengers to Turner, the sitting MP, must come forward by this Sunday, which is also the final day for new members to join. The nomination event will take place in Campbellville, at the Lion's Hall at 7:30 pm.
The routine process of opening the Conservative party nomination was begun in Halton last Friday. Potential candidates need to have been a party member for six months, post a monetary deposit and have the support of 25 existing local Conservatives. The candidate who receives the most votes of people present on the evening of September 11 will become the nominated candidate.
"The rules certainly favour any group who can sign up instant members and then stack a meeting," Turner says. "And while that is democracy in action, and I respect it, this also means a special interest candidate can emerge whose views might be completely at odds with the majority of people who live in this riding.
"I am also concerned Halton might lose the independent voice I have tried to give it since becoming the MP. During the election campaign, people told me they wanted less party in politics and a much stronger voice telling Ottawa what families here want. It would be shame to have a single-issue candidate who just doesn't care about having Town Hall meetings, or an online presence or who will speak out on the tough issues when they arise."
Turner says he is 100% committed to fighting for the nomination in Halton, "because the last thing we need is an MP who cares only about people who think the way he does. That kind of politics is destructive."

Sounds good to me.
Didn't Canada just hold their parlimentary election s a few months ago?
Why is Garth Turner facing a possible challenger?
Does anyone know Canadian election laws?
Canada has a minority Parliament that can fall at any time and force a new election.
He is facing a challenger because his views are not conservative - he is a vocal and strong supporter of gay marriage and abortion, for instance, and called religious people "Taliban" and "Flowers of Evil".
Sounds good here too. Here in Colorado the Dems are using the Press to make it sound like A Mesa County Commissioner was wrong to give her opinion on PBS -about gay marriage
and the need to define what will be accepted- bestiality,
polygamy ? Her PBS response was reasonable and reflects I have heard elsewhere. Now the Dems-and the Press are slinging political cow crap at her to promote same sex marriage and the Democratic Party way of using the Office to "bring us together" in one big happy homosexual orgy.
Not here-but if you read the gjds.com "Rowland Udner Fire :
comments comparing homosexuality with bestiality denounced." cleary the Press has been "already captured"
and only the Democrats and the homosexuals are in step,
sensitive, and uniters not dividers.
I'd say list, if you're around.
I just can't do anything for the next couple of days. Friday I can.
Typical tactic of the left to try and redefine "conservative" so true conservatives can appear extreme.
Does anyone know Canadian election laws?
This isn't an issue of election law; it's a Conservative Party policy. Incumbent MPs are not protected from nomination challenges if an election is called.
As to why the CPC is nominating candidates so soon after an election when there is virtually no talk about a new election being called, I have no idea. I'm not a party member. Perhaps someone else with a little more knowledge of their policies can fill that detail in.
