I found the links in question. It comes from a site run by a FReeper. I've linked to things from her site for years...guess she decided to make a change...had one of her pics set for Friday which I've just downloaded & used ImageShack. As you might imagine, putting the threads together takes quite a bit of time & having to download everything would increase that quite a bit. Will continue to play it by ear until something like this rears its ugly head...

BTW, I knew what "no hotlinking" meant, but I was unaware of the above website's new modus operandi...

Even when I did get up (noon central) and go straight to your toons I didn't realize they were offensive until I had laughed at all of them and started reading the comments. I guess I'd make a lousy liberal. Have a good one, and keep 'em coming. There are plenty of us who appreciate your hard work and start all our weekdays with you. Even when they start around noonish.

Chris Muir of DayByDay makes his stuff widely (and freely) available to newspapers and bloggers. I've even emailed him to express my appreciation of his 'toons I mentioned "that I saw on FreeRepublic", and he graciously answered my email. In that, he raised no objections to having his material on FR. He is a class act and GREAT political satirist! I just wish everybody would read DayByDay.

Actually, I know Sondra, and she's been complaining about hotlinkers for as long as I've known her. There's NEVER been a free hotlinking "policy" at Sondra's site. Never.
If you read her site as much as some of us do, you'd know that.

I'm sorry it takes time to put these threads together, but let me put it this way: having a job takes time out of a person's day, right? Well, I don't feel like getting a job, because it takes time out of my day. Instead, I'll just steal my groceries. Maybe a car, too. It's much more convenient that way.

That's true, and a fair point. I only used him as an example.

However, regular bloggers don't do that.

There isn't even any attribution on the ones he's hotlinking from blogs--no link, no nothing. You'd only know where to find it by checking the link properties. So not only is it stealing bandwidth, it's stealing someone else's work. I saw one of the pics had a URL 'shopped onto it, so you'd have to 'shop that out to steal the work. The other one didn't.

You know, maybe if the readers in the toon threads like her stuff, they might actually want to VISIT her site. You're stealing her bandwidth, her work, AND her traffic.
If it were me, I'd have swapped out the pics LONG ago, and I wouldn't have 'shopped in the Lebanese woman or the eye.

By the way, a lot of bloggers are Freepers. It doesn't mean it's OK for FR to STEAL from them.

Look, E Windsor...I briefly look through her site daily...never noticed anything re hotlinking. She even FReepmailed me a link from her site to run last week & I told her I would (didn't even know she was a FReeper). Have had problems with TinyPic before...a week's worth of toon links had disappeared & were lost...you don't know how annoying that is. It has happened on several occasions. Have had problems also exceeding some ImageShack limitations. My threads are supposed to bring toons/pics to FReepers that they can actually see & that's what I've been doing for > 2 years. Have also not hotlinked to sites when either I'm asked or I see it's frowned upon. Some cartoonists have asked for attribution & they got it, etc., etc., etc. Meanwhile, if you'd like to start your own cartoon thread, where you follow your rules to the letter, be my guest. Until then, you don't have to view my threads if these things bother you so much...it's only right if you don't so that you can keep their bandwidth down...

Obviously you have a problem accepting criticism (see the other comments here). I SAID it's a good thread, but HOTLINKING IS STEALING.

Quit acting like you just found the internets yesterday. It's something everyone knows is wrong.

I'm sure losing pictures is annoying, but I can assure you, it IS NOT as annoying as having to pay for excess bandwidth consumption. If you had your own site and people hotlinked from it, you'd be hella pissed off too.

And if Sondra mailed you a LINK, then post the LINK. Don't hotlink images. I'm a blogger too, and I know exactly what sending a link is about, and it's NOT an invitation to steal bandwidth.

spot on EW, how sleazy: stealing the image, the bandwith and not even giving a link to the original site. How tacky. Isnt that plagerism? Intellectual property theft? When I first read the thread, I thought these were all original photoshops by pukie becasue thats the way they were presented.
