Schwarzenegger Issues Statement Celebrating Continued Preservation of Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial
Gov. Schwarzenegger issued the following statement today following President Bush's signing of Representative Duncan Hunter's Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial Protection Act (H.R. 5863), which transfers possession of the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in La Jolla, to the federal government:
"Today's action by the President preserving the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial is a great signal to our veterans that we will not forget the sacrifice that they made during times of conflict. The Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial is a historic landmark that has been an important part of the San Diego community since it was erected over 50 years ago and will continue to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our freedom."
On July 31, 2006, Gov. Schwarzenegger sent a letter to Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist asking him to help preserve the war memorial.
Last Friday, Governor Schwarzenegger toured Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in La Jolla, CA.
Well, good afternoon, everyone. I just want to say it is really great to be here today and to see this Soledad Veterans Memorial here, and to see this wonderful cross up there. And I have never seen it before, and this was very important for me to see it, because there were a lot of debates over it, if it should be taken down or if it should stay. And Im very happy that Congress has intervened and has acted to protect this great war memorial and this Veterans Memorial here, because it is honoring so many of the veterans, so many of the brave men and women that have fought for this country. And those are the people, the people that you see up there on each one of those plaques, each picture, each plaque, represents someone that has fought for the freedom and for the democracy of this country.
And theres no one that appreciates that more than me, as an immigrant that has come over here to this country, recognizing the fact that the reason why I could have a dream at the age of 15 to come to America and to kind of live out and realize my American dream, because people have fought for hundreds of years to protect this great country. Thats why we are the greatest nation in the world, thats why we have this freedom, thats why people can be successful here in this country. It is all about the soldiers, its all about the brave men and women that have protected all of this. Without that, we wouldnt have anything. We wouldnt have that great success, we wouldnt be the greatest country in the world, the most generous country, the most powerful country economically and militarily. Its all because of those men that you see there on those plaques.
So this is why I wanted to see this here firsthand; I think its a great accomplishment. And I want to thank also the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial Organization for doing that and working here. A lot of volunteers work on that, and raising private money to get this done, so I want to thank them also.
This is the first I heard of this.

No comment about Schwarzenegger, but I'm sure glad the memorial was saved. Congress and Bush should be proud of their actions. I am.
Ok, I "LOVE" what he is speaking about... : ) <<< me
When ya move to "TEXAS" I will be proud to say "he" is now a "TEXAN" come on home arnold... : ) <<< me
Beautiful picture. Thanks for posting it.
The US Congress voted to save it, President Bush signed the bill.
If you think the overwhelmingly leftist Dem CA Legislature would have passed the bill, you are totally clueless about CA and Democrats in general.
Imagine if it had been silver. LOL Good one.
I think it is great that we are seeing a push back against the ACLU. Whether one is religious or not the idea that religious symbols can not be displayed in public venues because someone might be offended has never been a part of the Constitution. Paranoid secularism based on myths seems to have the goal to drive religious expression into the shadows while replacing it with public views of otherwise private sexual activities.
A whole generation has grown up with a twisted picture of religious history largely shaped by secular atheists who continue to mislead young impressionable minds about the role of religion in world history while encouraging them to submit their souls to service of political and social machines bent on spreading a form of hedonism and faith in oligarchy that not only places modern society at risk but also jeopardizes the health and happiness of the individuals who believe such things.
July 31?
Better late than never, I suppose.
The House approved it 10 days earlier and the Senate voted to save it on August 1.
The mailman hadn't even delivered Arnie's letter.
It's a beautiful, breath-taking memorial....and yet it makes the ACLU/liberals wet their beds....go figure.
Go figure? Oh we both know why. Can't stomach them.
How much we learn about them from what they fear and what they hold up in place of their unborn to celebrate to the world.
No not clueless, just disappointed, about CA.
and about Democrats in general.
Yep that's me, "totally clueless" about Democrats in general.
Take your hyperbole "somewhere else".
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you -- I was saying it more tongue and cheek -- but the point is serious, that in CA you could never have gotten such a bill through. And remember, the courts already ruled against keeping the cross.
