Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.Raymond Chandler, The Simple Art of Murder
A kind of shorthand had developed between fellow OU alums Rick Rescorla and Fred McBee during their 30-year friendship. When one of them quipped Raymond Chandlers famous quote on the detective hero, they both knew what it meant: Sometimes, you have gather your courage and just do what needs to be done.
Thanks for setting the record straight early in the thread.
He really was a super class hero.
I respect reasonable skepticism.
But there is hereon a cadre of naysayers who's major doctrine are 'agin'it'
"cain't happen 'cause I never imagined it or figured out how it possibly could happen given my world view, cosmology and constructions on reality and since I'm close to God or exceed God in brilliance, I'm obviously always right."
'cain't ever happen (for above reasons).'
'I haven't allowed it to happen so it won't happen.'
'My pride couldn't stand it happening so it won't happen.'
'My rebellion couldn't stand it happening so it won't happen.'
etc.
etc.
etc.
Sheesh.
The times we live in are convoluted and complex. Science itself is finding mystifying realities aplenty, still.
Things are likely to get more convoluted and complex before it's over.
Humility and caution before abject knee-jerk; arbitrary, arrogant naysaying would seem to be THE MORE RATIONAL approach . . . but not by those of the high priesthood of naysayers hereon.
Sheesh.
OK,
Offending button found--now again in the "off" position. We now return you to your regularly scheduled FREEPING.
Sigh.
I went to rickrescorla.com and checked it out. This was an amazing man.
You should watch the show. It is very eye opening.
ping!
He died on 9/11!!
Thank you so much for letting us all know! I would have missed it. It's on here in Alaska right now, but it is going to be replayed again in 4 hours and I'll record it then.
BUMP!!
My brother had two friends who worked for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. One of them had moved on to a new job just a few weeks before, and the other one overslept on 9-11.
If you want on or off my aerospace ping list, please contact me by Freep mail.
Based on the floor he was on, he most likely died when American Airlines flight 11 hit the building.
Before my company moved from mid town town Manhatten (45th and 6th) to Memphis, some 20 years ago, I commuted to NY from New Jersey and became friends with several people who worked in the WTC, one of which was a senior IT executive with Morgan Stanley. For five years I've been afraid to check to see if they still worked there when 9/11 happened or if they survived. I don't know if I'll ever have that courage. Until I check they are still "potentially alive," ala Schrodinger's Cat. I'd rather not "collapse that state vector."
I know. I'm a coward.
However, I'll know we've won if someone does a true story of Rick Rescorla. Then I'll have the courage to look for my friends and to accept whatever I find.
TWA 800 was always suspicious. I still havent bought that story about the fuel tank.
There is a trailer at the end of "We were soldiers" featuring Rick. I've read all about him, and my brother-in-law was in the outfit. He was a helluva soldier.
I didn't know that about the Stone movie. Why did Stone ignore Rescorla?
My girlfriend walked into the plaza just as the second plane hit. Her worst memory is of people scrambling into gift shops to buy cameras. She can't escape the memory of the faces of people heading towards the WTC while she ran from it. It haunts her. And she refuses to see the movie. I promised her I wouldn't see it.
I'm sure there've been threads on this, but I'll take this opportunity to ask: is the movie cathartic for those who were there, or traumatic?
The Stone movie focusses on the emergency response to 9/11....
I dont even know if the script even had Rescorla in it....let alone Stone "ignoring" him.
Should we see it?
It worked out that I could view it again. I had seen this one before. I make an exception for this gentlemen. I DO believe he FORSAW a second attack. He KNEW it would happen again after the 1993 attack. He's a good guy.
I will. I didn't know that show was about HIM.
He's a good guy. He's a true loss. It's a shame we don't have more like him.
Others should see this too:
