Sources Say N.J. A.G. Agrees to Resign

Trenton, N.J. -- New Jersey's attorney general agreed to resign Tuesday after a special prosecutor concluded she violated state ethics laws by intervening in a traffic stop involving her boyfriend, according to two high-ranking Statehouse officials.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt an evening news conference scheduled by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

Corzine met with Zulima Farber earlier in the day to tell her she should step down as New Jersey's chief law enforcement officer, according to other officials who spoke to The Associated Press, also on condition of anonymity.

Corzine had no immediate comment. Nor did Farber.

Farber's live-in boyfriend, lawyer Hamlet Goore, was pulled over by police in Fairview for a traffic violation in May, and Farber showed up at the scene in her state car. Goore's van was found to be improperly registered and his license appeared to be suspended, but he was allowed to drive home.

In recent weeks, Farber denied doing anything to influence the police. But a special prosecutor appointed by the governor said in a report issued Tuesday that Farber violated state ethics laws by "approving actions which allowed Mr. Goore to drive his vehicle home."

"The attorney general knowingly acted to secure a benefit for Mr. Goore that was violative of the motor vehicle laws and obviously not available to the general public," Richard J. Williams wrote in his report.

Farber will enjoy an obscenely bloated pension plus some other perks, I bet.

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

No way - the day after she leaves office, she'll settle into her new six-figure job with Corzine's campaign.

Nothing new here.

Corrupt people run the state. It filters down.

If nothing else, this article is entertaining just to read the names "Zulima Farber" and "Hamlet Goore."

FEDERAL PROSECUTOR SHORT LIST

Possible Democratic candidates for United States Attorney if John Kerry wins

One certain casualty of a John Kerry victory would be U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie, a Republican who was named to the post by President Bush in 2001. Traditionally, federal prosecutors serve at the pleasure of the President, and Christie would likely resign his post next year if the Democrats capture the White House. U.S. Attorney is essentially an appointment by the United States Senators of the President's party; if Kerry is elected, Jon Corzine (who may be running for Governor in 2005) and Frank Lautenberg -- if the two can agree on a choice -- would make their recommendation to the White House.

ZULIMA FARBER

A partner at a prestigious Roseland law firm, the 60-year-old Cuban American was nearly appointed to the state Supreme Court last year.  She served as an Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor, as Assistant Counsel to the Governor, and as state Public Advocate.

And to think McSleazy wanted her to be on NJ Supreme Court.

She would have been the perfect fit.

I called Menendez office this afternoon and asked if he was going to bring her to D.C. to join his staff since they shared the same ethics.

No mention of party. That means it's a "non-Republican."

And if Zulima Farber resigns as attorney general, what next political plum will she be awarded in the Corzine administration? After all, when democrats get caught, they don't really get punished; they get kicked "upstairs."
