The director's first postwar project was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre...A sublime film. LOVE IT!

Agreed- his first two were his best.

Now HE was a DIRECTOR. Too many current directors are interested in artfully-constructed SHOTS. Huston told stories with the camera. His movies didn't draw attention to how pretty the pictures were--you were drawn into the stories and characters.
We need more Hustons and Curtizes and Wylers and fewer Lucas/Spielberg wannabes.

The author, B. Traven, was probably a anarchist.

A good friend lives across the street from the old Flynn estate. He swears that on quiet evenings the squeals of young girls can be heard from the usually empty estate (current owner only stores his vintage autos there in two new buildings). Flynn used to send his limo to Hollywood high as school let out to entice the girls, encouraged by their "stage moms", to party with Flynn and his cronies.

The man has good taste.
A journey to Monument Valley and a view from Ford's Point is one of the most spectacular and unforgettable on earth.

Wasn't John Houston the voice of God speaking to Heston's Moses in de Mille's The Ten Commandments? Or do I have him confused with someone else? I know de Mille narrated his movie, same as always, but I don't believe he did the voice of God in that one.

And I can't believe my fingers just did that STUPID typo, I didn't even see that!! Duh!

He made some schlock, but certain artists do one or two things that are so brilliant, it's enough. Such as Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird. Huston had a brilliant career, even if some of his work was Grade B.

Ned Beatty didn't play Hazel Motes. Beatty was in the movie. I think he's the guy who Motes ran down in his car.

A great director, actor and man. I liked the line in Chinatown - Old buildings, politicians and whores all gain respect if they live long enough.

Truman Capote said that when he was employed as a writer for one of Huston's movies, he shared a room on location with Huston. Huston would make all sorts of noises to make people outside the room, including Humphrey Bogart, think that he and Capote were having gay sex. Bogart said that Huston had "finally gone that way".

I believe HESTON did the voice of God in the Burning Bush scene, actually, and though it was left up in the air for years, a few years ago Heston admitted he did the voice in the rest of the movie, too. Usually I'd be skeptical, but since he was always acknowledged as the BB voice, it only stands to reason.

John Huston directed many classics. His true masterpieces were, The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Huston was in a class with few other directors of his day.
