IDF General Staff sources: Halutz cannot escape resignation

Senior sources in the Israel Defense Forces General Staff and field officers who took part in the war in Lebanon said on Tuesday that Chief of Staff Dan Halutz, who went to his bank branch and sold an NIS 120,000 investment portfolio only three hours after two soldiers were abducted by Hezbollah on the northern border, cannot escape resignation.

The sources say there is a clear ethical flaw in the chief of staff's behavior during the hours when soldiers were killed in Lebanon and others were attempting to rescue wounded. Halutz should resign the moment the military completes its pullout from south Lebanon, they said.

At this stage, it does not appear that Halutz intends to resign of his own accord.

Several hours after the July 12 abduction, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared war on Hezbollah and Israeli warplanes began bombing targets deep inside Lebanon.

But as the country's political and military echelons met urgently to discuss the possible declaration of war, Halutz went at 12:00 P.M. to sell an investment portfolio, the Ma'ariv newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Olmert, Peretz and Halutz must draw the necessary conclusions. If they won't the people of Israel must force them out. They are a disgrace and unfit to lead the country.

Even though 120,000 NIS is only about $25,000 (if my calculations are correct), I am surprised he didn't put his portfolio in a blind trust while serving in government office.

Its not the money. Its the appearance of the conduct. That alone is indefensible in a high public official.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni should be added to your list. She has been an absolute disaster, voting against the war, and refusing to vote for a resolution that would have allowed an expanded role for the Israeli infantry. Unarguably the worst cabinet in Israeli history, worse than Ehud Barak's if you can believe that.

That's why he should have put his money in a blind trust and let a manager handle it.

Yes a Cabinet of losers, incompetents, the corrupt and people just out of their depth. And that's putting it mildly.

I agree, Livni has been terrible and must go along with the others. I've read that she does not even speak English! What is up with that!

At 4.5 New Isreali Sheckles per one U.S. Dollar, well do the math... If this "hugh" amount means he has to resign, his political oponents must be socialists! Not even $30,000 U.S.

This is a piece of proof that olmert and his band of leftists are soley responsible for the present situation. If olmert's government is toppled, it will be proven beyond all argument. I pray Israel gets a new government that will take it in spades to satan's army!

If you are questioning voting Republican in November, just appreciate that we, if the dims get back in power, will get the same type of limp-wristed reactions to islamofascist demons and their murderous agenda.

Not voting in November, or casting a protest vote that lessens our chances of maintaining power over evil, should be carefully considered against the events taking place today.

I wonder if revealing the individual equities in his portfolio would make this flat-out sinister, not just contemptible as it appears now....?

He had to go to the bank - so what? Maybe something happened in his family that necessitated this.

he should resign, there is no excuse for this. I am not buying that this was just some innocent trip to the ATM for this guy.

She has been absolutely awful on her own merits, and as part of this utter disaster of a government, but I'm going to go further and be very un-PC and state that the mere fact that Israel has a woman representing itself to the world is, in the eyes of its very hostile neighbors, a sign of tremendous weakness. Arabs on the whole don't take women seriously, and view those who do as very weak. It was like the US having April Glasby (sp?) be our ambassador to Iraq in 1990 - it invites trouble.

Maybe Condi Rice and John Bolton should trade jobs? ;)

As a first step. About a year after that, JB would need to form a "JB for President" committee. Heck, we haven't had a President with a decent mustache who kicked ass and took names for about 100 years - and its WAY past time.
