Tucson authorities looking for 2 Middle Eastern men
KVOA Tucson Channel 4 News ^ | Lorraine Rivera

Law enforcement sources confirm to News 4 that Tucson Police have issued an "attempt to locate" on two Middle Eastern men in their 20's who purchased nearly 50 phones from Sam's Club and Wal-Mart in Tucson.

Sources say the men made the purchases on Saturday and Sunday.

There's been a number of arrests nationwide with very similar circumstances.

News 4 is not linking this case with the national cases, but we do want to point out how similar they are.

Arrests have been made in Michigan and Ohio and there are reports of large numbers of cell phones being sold to young men fitting the same description in Wisconsin.

There was a very similar case that went down in Antigo, Wisconsin where police say another group of men bought more than 90 cell phones from 4 different stores.

News 4 spoke with a Wal-mart and Sam's Club representative and he would not confirm nor deny that these men did in fact buy those phones.

Instead, he referred us to the police and we spoke with the Pima Sheriff's Department and the Marana and Oro Valley police departments.

Tucson law enforcement authorities confirmed late Sunday night that officers are searching for these two men.

Yes, the phones are used as detonators on bombs. Since they are disposable phones they are untraceable.

They could even buy them cheaper on Ebay probably (I wonder if the feds are even looking at that angle- there are ways to catch people).

LOL, yeah like those auctions that start at $.01 with a $19.99 s/h charge!

I'd go blind if I had that job of tracking all of those down :)

A scare in the air for one British Airways flight http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1683789/posts It has an interview (short) with a passenger. They never found whose phone it was, or how it got there.

Couldn't they just run a sting (set up a account and sell)? When someone bids/sells, the other half of the transaction can do a search for the person's ph# and actual name. I've done it, as both a seller and a buyer.

some for communication, some are used for bomb detonators, and who knows what else, possibly the batteries are sold to Meth dealers due to the lithium in the batteries.

That could well be the plan to use them that way here too.

What I have to say about them would probably get me banned and someone knocking at my door, the `n `strds the jihadists are.

Not sure if eBay would go for that.

I'm not sure of their cooperation record with authorities.

On that note, I'm sure the "powers that be" are doing whatever they can to find these terrorist cells.

I as a private citizen, however, am not foolish enough to expect the gov't to look out for my protection at every minute, and be lulled into a false sense of security. It's just common sense (growing up in So. Cal, unfortunately taught that lesson).

Being "aware" of one's surroundings doesn't take "puckering up" or "freaking out."

More than fishy. But if there are no discernible terrorist ties, no sense in stating otherwise.

It's aggravating, but I believe law enforcement is feeding the public a line of bull for a good purpose. These guys buying cell phones are the small fish. If law enforcement throws them back in the pond, they may lead to the big fish, and that's how plots get exposed in time to stop them.

I think I'll check it out; I'm reading Horowitz' book right now "Unholy Alliance" but I am also reading Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."
