Inside Scoop on Islamic Cell Phone Buyers Who Planned to Blow Up Mackinac Bridge
Debbie Schlussel.com ^ | August 13, 2006 | Debbie Schlussel

By now, you've probably read the news that the three Palestinians caught in Caro, Michigan with 1,000 TracFone cellphones are involved in a plot to blow up Michigan's Mackinac Bridge (it connects both Michigan peninsulas). Mackinac Bridge site here.

But here's what you didn't read:

Sources tell DebbieSchlussel.com that the men are from Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the group that works in concert with HAMAS in performing homicide bombings in Israel. The group once even considered merging with HAMAS, at the time that it was headed by University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian, a founder of the group. Maybe now sleepy Americans will awaken to note that Palestinian terrorism is not just Israel's problem. It's America's.

Sources say the plot was uncovered because law enforcement personnel observed two or more other men videotaping the Mackinac Bridge.

Mackinac Bridge (Peninsulas Bridge, Michigan)

Sources also say that it is very unlikely the men could have succeeded in blowing up the Mackinac Bridge--even with the chips from 1,000 phones for 1,000 bombs--as it is several miles long (it's the world's third longest suspension bridge). At a total length of 26,372 feet, the steel structure can support 38,486 tons of weight and is very, very strong and fortified. The sources say that, likely, the plan would have succeeded in bombing cars driving on the bridge, but not bringing the structure down

You don't have to destroy the WHOLE BRIDGE, just one section and the rest will take care of itself.

Any man made structure can be brought down but to bring down the Big Mac would require a mighty big explosion. I would be more inclined to think another of a jetliner attack severing cables or a ship passing near the towers than vehicles crossing the bridge.

I just had a disturbing thought ... what if they're actually intending to probe reaction, security, etcetera, at Walmart stores? Start blowing them up, across the country, and what a disaster that would be, both economically and loss of life. One of the biggest corporations in the US, if not the biggest. Their enablers on the left and in the media would be secretly squealing with glee, too.

I think three men working to wire 1,000 cell phone triggered IED's to the bridge would probably have been noticed.

The Mackinack bridge theory is BS. Think lots of roadside bombs across the US...that's more likely.

The annual Labor Day bridge walk has had as many as 85,000 people on the bridge. The potential death toll from an attack on this is absolutely staggering. It would make 9/11 pale in comparison. We can't possibly know if everyone who may have been planning this are in custody.

Yeah, I'm not familiar enough with the cell phone market in Europe to understand why the phones are easier to buy?? / cheaper?? / whatever over here.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned - tho the phones will be untracreable, since there is no record of who bought them, tracking will be able to determine what cell phone a call comes from. People think that it's just the SIM that is operational in GSM phones and thus only the phone # is sent, but part of the DNA of the call is a serial number that identifies the actual phone itself.

A Brit lady found this out the hard way when she used her ex-hubbie's SIM to send threatening tm's to him - LE was able to bust her even though it looked like the tm's were coming from his number.

For some reason it must be easier to make cash-only, anonymous purchases of large quantities of these types of phones in the US than in Europe or the Middle East.

Remember, the authorities in Great Britain said it would be death and destruction on "an unimaginable scale". What if they were planning to detonate those liquid devices with the cell phones? Their intent might not have been to take down the bridge but to kill or injure thousands of infidels.

Amen!

It's not really my perspective and is thought-hyperbole but . . .

SOMETIMES, images of using such evil mass murdering idiots as . . . actors . . . in training scenarios, experiences for bomb intervention SWAT teams . . . sometimes such images do flash through one's mind.

. . . and the rocket's red glare . . .
. . . over Israel laid bare . . .
. . . the Jihadi's bursting . . .
. . . no longer thirsting . . .
. . . for your blood and mine . . .
. . . having touched the wrong wire . . .
. . . on their land mine . . .

Wonder what those "sources" say about the potential of suicide bombers blowing up among the 50 or 60 thousand bridge walkers on the holiday?

They would probably say the same thing. The bridge would not fall.

They didn't say they couldn't inflict a horrible loss of life, they just said that they couldn't bring down the bridge.

It only takes a couple of bombs. The cellphones are only the detonators for crying out loud.

There might have been 900 other different targets

Islam is the problem.
Death is the cure.

Short of Jesus . . . it's the only other real cure I know of.

Looking at the Tracfone website, I don't see any reference to international roaming arrangements, so apparently you can't take their prepaid phones overseas and actually make a phone call. Furthermore, if these are the cheapest phones, then presumably they are not dual or triple band and would not work with a GSM network anyway.

So the explanation by the men described in the Dallas Morning Herald article that they were collecting the phones for a man in Dallas who was in turn reselling them overseas doesn't seem to hold water.

Billiant observation. I wonder if the Feds were able to figure that one out.

although these phones would still be useful overseas as timed detonators using only the alarm clock function.

Thanks for the info. I lived in Mesquite for a short time yrs ago.
I have a problem when terrorists are described as "home-grown", if what people mean is, they're citizens or have lived here for 10 years or something. Home-grown should be reserved for people born here of immigrated as a young child. (say before the age of 6)

Didn't Michael Moore say that there wasn't any terrorism? I hope that we can all learn to understand that we are under attack and these Progressive lefties cannot negotiate with terrorists.
Terrorists are calling for the genocide of the non-Muslim world. The sooner we understand this the better off we will all be.

Oh, I'm sure that they're being sold overseas, just not for simple, innocuous communication! ;>)

Don't know the details of the tracfones, but they would have to be compatible w/ GSM in Europe/ME to be even used for bomb detonation, I would think. Many GSM phones are sold here that are 'locked' so they can only be used for service on a particular service. They can be relatively easily 'unlocked' via firmware programming.

As an aside, think one of the articles mentioned that the boss works on 'Harry Hines', that's Business US 77 in Dallas, the old highway to Okla City, etc before I-35 was built. The north end of that road is a collection of stores owned by 'other than WASPs', shall we say, mostly latin american and oriental. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there's a strong ME prescence as well. One of the most successful of the folks on that road is Sam Moon, a Korean who has now built his own shopping center a bit north of the main drag on Harry Hines.

So the explanation by the men described in the Dallas Morning Herald article that they were collecting the phones for a man in Dallas who was in turn reselling them overseas doesn't seem to hold water.
