Looks like he is holding a photocopy on legal sized (or longer) paper.

I saw the pictures and thought the same thing. That guy doesn't look like the real Castro, could be one of his body doubles.

Where did you find image two?

Why does Castro's version have black text? Because they faxed it to him in the Bahamas?

Because Castro's holding a printout, not a real newspaper. I doubt it was photoshopped in, but that absolutely isn't printed on newspaper.

If you wanted to convince your country (and the world) that you're still alive, you'd be pictured with the actual newspaper (one would think, anyway).

Even if it's a photocopy it's at least as recent as the colored one.
The question is - is he really holding what he is shown holding ?
To: jdm
The paper Castro is holding doesn't look right. The perspective of the Newsletter header is wrong.

The real question is why is he sporting a red/white/blue Addidas sweat shirt???

My guess is, he's not in Cuba and the front page was faxed to him.

It's 11 x 17 paper, likely laser printed judging by the artifacts in the image, folded and carried to him (judging by the line in the photo down the middle.) It also appears to be a stack of 11 x 17's, looking at the top of the image.
Used to make my galley proofs on 11 x 17 before taking it to the print plant for my own newspaper.

Closely compare hairline, nose shape, ears and eyebrows. There appear to be dissimilarities, but it could be the differences in lighting and camera angle.

So I guess the intent of this picture is to show the Cuban people that not only is Castro healthy, but he's taken up jogging as well (check out that Adidas warm-up suit).

The real question is why is he sporting a red/white/blue Addidas sweat shirt??? Because the Cuban flag is red, white and blue and his sweat-fatigues are in the wash.

One possibility is that he is holding some paper alright-- but the content on the paper has been photoshopped in.
To: jdm
That's the old Hold-Todays-Newspaper trick. Castro's dead... that photo was taken weeks ago and the 'newspaper'... pasted in.
