Tuscola County prosecutors filed terrorism-related charges Saturday against three men who they say bought dozens of cell phones Friday in Caro in a globally coordinated plot involving the Mackinac Bridge.

They charged brothers Adham Abdelhamid Othman, 21, and Louai Abdelhamied Othman, 23, along with their cousin, Maruan Awad Muhareb, 18, with identical counts of collecting material to support terrorist acts and surveillance of a vulnerable target with intent to committ terrorism.

it's level at the middle and the ends.....

your post reminds me of a pic I saw of a kuwaiti who had been suspended nipple-deep in acid by saddams repuplican guard in 1991.....then klinton opened the immigration doors to captured and surrendered iraqi POWs.

I want to purge the United States of every arab/paki/farsi muslim!

The Bridge is actually 5 miles long. We walk it every Labor Day. Now our kids and grandkids walk it too. Yikes. Pretty close to home I think.

Reasonable points. Clearly cell phones are not THE problem- but they are a tool of THE problem. So why wouldn't we use information about large numbers of them being purchased to develop information about THE problem?? You're right- it's all in the approach.

We're not going to deport all muslims- so we're left with tracing activities, purchases and patterns...

Whether these phones are used for- raising ca$h for terrorist groups, making IEDs, or avoiding tracing phone calls- purchases of large numbers of them is important to track.

This is a little better headline than ALL the others about the Caro incident today, lol.

The rest all say "TEXANS accused of terror activities" and on and on. At least they're not Houston football team members - they're: Maruan Awad Muhareb, of Mesquite, Texas; Adham Abdelhamid Othman, of Dallas; and Louai Abdelhamied Othman, of Mesquite. Adham and Louai Othman are in their early 20s, and Muhareb is 18.

One thing I didn't see in this story, which I heard on the local news, was that they had also tried to buy large quantities of phones in Wisconsin and elsewhere in Michigan, before the Caro purchase.

That's why I was a little surprised at the Mackinac Bridge being the target. OTOH, there are lots of north Texans and Oklahomans I know who spend the month of August, and in some cases, the whole summer, in Mackinaw. Maybe they got the idea from hearing people around town talking about Mackinac.

There is the UP ya' know :-)

Yoopers don't count...'cause they're safe up there above the bridge. ;)

We have to put up with Dearbornistan and Hezb'allah High. Not to mention Dingell-dong.

Will you bring me back some fudge from JoAnne's Fudge Shop? I especially LOVE the double dark chocolate. But the butter pecan is quickly overtaking it!

All well and good, but what do we do about these obviously suspicious purchases of cell phones? Stand around and wait for a disaster?

I understand your concerns, but surely you can come up with a solution. If you can't, then I am forced to go with what I think is the most reasonable.

Not to be rude. When I made a statement about cellphones being used as a timer, it is not the same as a cheap digital clock. A cellphone could be programmed to "wake up", retrieve an SMS message or web message, voicemail, launch an application, parse data, and perform a function. The complexity has been overlooked. A base assumption of dialing, connecting and boom is antique.

Yet again we have calls for "common sense regulation". No islam, know peace.

Yes it was a wonderful experience, and we had a wonderful crew of several hundred men from all over the country. It was in 1955-57, before we had computers and laser surveying instruments and it was quite a problem locating the piers for the two main towers in open water with the instruments of that day. Did you know that because of the curvature of the earth the tops of the vertical main towers are one inch farther apart than than the 3800 ft distance at the base? We did the surveying at night so that sunlight would not raise the temperature of the steel measuring tapes and the steel structure. Our kids were little then and when we finished the job we drove across the upper peninsula and you will have an interesting trip on the upper peninsula. that is one of my favorite parts of the country.

In order to instill abject terror and fear into our soulds. Like they did in Somalia and Clinton folded.

Prayers for their safe travel. :-)

Is it 5? Seemed longer when I was 7! LOL. Still, it is quite impressive. I remember driving up to the bridge, seeing the pillars in the distance. I was overwhelmed.

Overwhelming is right. I was 7 or 8 when I first saw and crossed the bridge...it flipped me out and has on every crossing since :)

You know, I think my experience as a 7 year old led to my phobia of driving over bridges when I first learned to drive. I still get a little jumpy when driving over new bridges. :)

This is something I've worried about too. It wasn't too long ago there was a news story out of Florida about two middle eastern men who got on a public school bus. They said it was an accident and they didn't know much english.

I think they wanted to see how easy it would be and if anyone would stop them. "Dry run?"

There were so many people outraged that these poor, confused, middle eastern men were taken into custody and questioned.

I wonder how outraged they will be when their children get blown up by these poor misunderstood middle eastern men? It's sad to think that that's what it would take for them to wake up and stop thinking like sympathetic morons.

The real spooky thing about this is that my family and I were THISCLOSE to going to Macinaw Island this summer.

Instead we went to Chicago....then those 6 guys get busted on that Sears Tower plot.

(sigh)
