Expellee group says it cannot afford inquiry into ex-Nazis links

Aug 12, 2006, 16:02 GMT

Berlin - The German refugee group that angered Poland's leaders this week with a Berlin exhibition about ethnic purges has said it cannot afford to investigate any failings in its own past.

Erika Steinbach, president of the Federation of Expellees, an organization representing Germans expelled from eastern Europe after World War II, told the German news magazine Der Spiegel, 'That would cost money that we don't have.'

The expellees, who sought for decades to recover their lost property, were regularly accused by communist governments of 'revanchism,' or trying to reverse the German territorial losses of World War 11.

Steinbach was asked by Der Spiegel- which appears on newsstands on Monday - for comment on research that suggests more than one third of nearly 200 senior expellee federation figures before 1982, including three national secretaries, had formerly been Nazi party members or had other Nazi links.

She replied that the federation had been beyond reproach in excluding ex-Nazis, but distinguished between former passive members of the Nazi party and those who 'filled roles that are not acceptable.'

The Federation of Expellees, whose insistence that the War's outcome is unfair enrages many eastern Europeans, is campaigning for the dispossession of the Germans to be condemned like other 20th century 'ethnic purges.' It opened an exhibition on that theme this week in a Berlin museum.

Oh, I think Polish government could help with this problem.

Maybe some loan? Or even donation.

I agree completely. This is just as ludicrous as so much other crap that is going on in the world now. The amazing thing is that this "exhibition" is happening in Germany. You would think, after starting two world wars, these people would finally figure it out.

Perhaps the world should now figure out exactly what WWII cost each nation then send Germany the amended tab. The German government could also pay for research into the etiology of the "expellees". Personally, these people are howling at the moon. There are always misplaced people after a war. Just what's their point?

This reminds me of Utah law enforcement saying that they don't have the resources or manpower to investigate polygamist welfare fraud and tax fraud. But they have tons of manpower to pull people over for bogus reasons coming over the Wyoming and Idaho borders to search for fireworks and beer that isn't the watered-down local crap. They also have plenty of manpower to run sting operations to make sure that people are being ID'd when buying cigarettes and 3.2 beer in convenience stores.

Oh really. "But distinguished between former passive members of the Nazi party and those who 'filled roles that are not acceptable." I would love to make a donation to help uncover or "distinguish" the Nazi members in this group. The Twins were not blowing smoke, this is a truly evil group.

Germany can't let go of their hatred for Pres. Bush but everybody should just forget about two world wars and millions murdered in the Holocaust. And they wonder what's wrong with other people.

Long ago I saw a poster in Germany from a group like this. A map of central Europe, with what was then West Germany labeled as West Germany, what was then East Germany labeled as Central Germany, and the area now a part of Poland (around Danzig/Gdansk) labeled as East Germany.

And your point is? Germany legally gave up the claim on the now western parts of Poland in 1990 - just before the "Treaty about the final regulation with regard to Germany" was signed and ratified by the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, the French Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America and the Union of the Sovereign Soviet Republics.

Before that, it was considered "occupied German territory under Polish administration" under the treaties between the winners of WW2. The current borders were Stalin´s idea, and it was controversial to take 1/4-1/3 of Germany´s land by shifting Poland to the West. That meant to deport millions of Germans, but also many Poles. As I said, there was no agreement with the western allies to do that.

Who started WW1? Germany is not alone to blame. Actually I blame Russia, Austria the most and then equally France, Germany and Great Britain. These were the so called great powers in Europe 1914, and they all wanted the war. Have you seen photos and newspaper headlines of the war´s beginning? It´s terrible to see the people in entire Europe cheering that the war has begun.

Sorry, that should've had a sarcasm tag on it. Not letting go of hatred for the US President and thinking WWII should be forgotten about is my illustration of German "logic", not an endorsement of it. We shouldn't forget about it.

You would think, after starting two world wars, these people would finally figure it out.

World War II was largely the product of the French. Without the Versailles Treaty, pushed by France, there wouldn't have been a Hitler.

And your point is?

Simply that as of 1970 there were Germans who sought the return of territory or property lost during the post-WWII westward shift of Polish borders.

imply that as of 1970 there were Germans who sought the return of territory or property lost during the post-WWII westward shift of Polish borders.

When you lose a war, you lose territory and you have displaced persons. Don't start wars you can't win.

but distinguished between former passive members of the Nazi party and those who 'filled roles that are not acceptable.'

At the beginning it's nice to see that the Polish are here on FR.

As far as infamous Erica is concerned she is not worth mentioning, yet the matter causes serious concerns. Behind those seemingly innocent exhibitions vicious and cunning plans are hidden.

Germans still try to convince the rest of the world that they fell a victim of Nazism. They try to tell us all that there's a substantial difference between "bad Nazis" and "good innocent German civilians".

They all seem to tell us that while Nazis were bad and murdered like hordes of Jingis Khan, the rest of the nation were totally different.

OK! So, let me ask.

Who the heck brought the Waffen SS men up?

Who brought these Nazi frigging animals up?

Hitler himself with his squeeze Eve Braun?

No Nazi mothers! No Nazi fathers! No Nazi sisters! No Nazi brothers! No Nazi grandfathers! No Nazi grandmother!

NO NAZI CIVILIANS!

Looks like Germany was only a nation of "heroes".But then again, even Claus Philipp Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, the Germans are proud of, used to say things about the Polish people that SS H.Himmler or Josiph Mengele from Auschwitz-Birkenau would be proud of.

But why do I waste my time writing about Germans of the past?

I was in Germany at the football match Poland-Germany. When I returned flabbergasted to the hotel, I heard the things state TV ZDF had told about those tens of thousands of Poles who had come to Germany to the World Cup final. I decided never return to that country again.

For those who might have missed the thread, two guys from state TV ZDF said that Poles had come to Germany by cars that had been stolen in Germany and then they added that they had already an opportunity to meet Polish team since Polish players had once been cleaning their houses.

History teaches us much, so I wasn't surprised at all that Germans said such things. After all, ridiculing "Polish subhumans" has always been a part of German nature.

Outrageous insults against the Head of State of Poland, Mr Lech Kaczynski in the Tageszeitung might have actually been neglected by the Polish authorities since the paper is an insignifficant local tabloid.

However, the prime-time coverage by a whole-state ZDF television is not a triffle.

I thing Mr Ingolf Lueck , Mike Krueger (as my memory serves) and their ZDF bosses must have learnt "respect" for the Polish people from their Nazi ancestors. After all, their untold hatred to Poles was expressed loud and clear.

Some things never change.

PS. Forgive my long post, Lizol. I, as a member of the ruling party, thought that my viewpoints will be at least worth presenting.

By the way, why the name "Lizol"? (brrrrr!)

A memoir from the childhood times. :-)))

Friends used to call me "Izold" at that time (to long story to explain why).

And one day someone started calling me "Lizol", instead of that. And the rest caught it too.

From your previous posts I see you're a staunch supporter of the Civic Platform. It's good to have an opponent here (I'm kidding!)

Seriously, I'm rather satisfied that PO's notes are still strong, almost equal to ours. All in all, you are a good altertnative to our rules. If we (God protect us!) screw the things up, which is quite possible with Romcio Giertych and Endrju Lepered, Poland will at least be ruled by responsible people, not by those [autocensorship] of SLD!

By the way, I can understand all attacks on us (it's politics - we do the same), but Rokita's accusing Marcinkiewicz's govt of no successes at Winter Olympic Games made us laughing to tears. Funny man, I do like him! (realy! no kidding!)

The shape of a German territory on the map is really intriguing. Germany's prewar eastern border looks like a mouth of a beast (say, a crocodile) ready to swallow Poland.

It's good that history cut that hungry snout off. :)))))
