Fascinating read, shield, thank you for posting it.Georgie Anne is probably the only American journalist who ever really "got" Fidel. His life reads like a Gabriel Garcia-Marquez novel, only with real blood & real tears, not magic ones, dripping from the pages.I've often wondered whether spiking this megalomaniacal savage's drinking water with lithium would have saved the Cuban people from his monstrously murderous ego - I don't anymore. I should have read the entire article before posting. It goes on to state that Castro did not get along with the Soviets. Castro chose his own middle name, "Alexander," after Alexander the Great. I believe his goal was to take over the entire world. No wonder he wanted the Soviets to nuke the US.

Fidelismo is less Communist than it is personalist. One suspects Castro would have been equally at home as a fascist - if the temperament of the times had allowed it. He has no true successors.

That's true. The first thing Fidel did was to purge the Old Communists from the Party and if any one got any idea into their heads the country would be run as a collective leadership they were put in their place. Castro saw himself as Cuba. Every one answered to him; he answered to no one.

He succeeded at what he wanted: to have power to the end. He failed at everything else. Cuba is destitute and miserable. It has the the 24th-highest infant mortality in the world (in Batista's time it was #8). I'd fel sorry for him, but he is a monster we will be better off without. Like Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il Jung, etc., etc.

Castro relied on violence and luck which worked for him incredibly well. After the attack on the US, he would get to work taking over the western hemisphere, then he would have turned on the Soviets.
