(TV5) -- While FBI agents pour into Caro another incident breaks out in Gratiot County. At approximately 11:35am August 11th police were called to the Dollar General Store in Ithaca after a" clerk in Ithaca became suspicious after two men came into the store, and became upset when they were turned down while trying to buy several disposal cell phones.
TV5's Mike Terry spoke with the clerk who called police. She said they were two "Middle Eastern" men and said they've been coming into the store weekly and buying disposable cell phones. She said the same thing was happening at the dollar general store in Alma.
You might think the clerk became suspicious because of what was going on in Caro but when we asked the clerk she said she wasn't even aware of what was going on.
The policy at their store is that they can only sell two cell phones, per person, per day. She saw the men put the phones in the trunk of the car and when she thought they were coming back in, she called 9-1-1.
We did talk to Ithaca police while there has been no crime committed-they do want to find these men, and run their names against government watch lists.
That's what I think. A guy in Ohio just got busted; found out he had sold 600 cell phones to someone in Dearborn, MI. Putting this together with all these other incidents, and the missing Egyptians (to my knowledge, they have not all been caught) and the recent coup in England, I'm having serious, serious worries.
My husband said the same thing; but maybe they don't want to take the time to do it. Who knows.
There is definitely something bad going on.
I think they get squat in that case. But I'm still trying to figure out where they are going to find that many virgins that deserve eternity with a terrorist. I mean, they are virgins, for crying out loud. Maybe there are 4 or 5 homicidal virgins somewhere that deserve that fate but 72 much less 72 times the number of suicide bombers?
Ha ha. Electricity escapes me too!! It always seemed sort of mystical.
I got a new cellphone today and asked the guy were people comng in buying scores of phones. He looked quite alarmed. And said "no way, no way".

Oh my, that never occurred to me. I thought it was odd that cell service went out in Queens , was it Queens?
My Lord, I never thought of that!!
That does seem to be the simplist explanation.
"The current attitudes in the United States scare me because we seem willing to let the enemy remain alive to continue their war against us. "
Good point. I was just thinking the other day about how people still disparage Reagan for making deals with South American dictators in order to keep Communism at bay. Until I realized, cold war or not, it was a war! And in war, you don't have the luxury of choosing your moralistic battles. You have to do whatever it takes to win, because the enemy sure will!
We've been too spoiled rotten by our military, we can now fight wars without having to put any burden on civilians. People whine about how awful the Iraq War is, but what sacrifices do they have to make? Especially compared to what citizens had to do for WWI, WWII, etc.
"But I'm still trying to figure out where they are going to find that many virgins that deserve eternity with a terrorist."
Did they ever say the virgins had to be girls? Plus I'm sure many of the terrorists are celibate...
I think I found the loophole! Silly martyrs!
I'd be real interested in some evidence that the cheapest of the cheap bottom-line cell handsets are sold with lithium batteries.
OK, GO HERE. The Motorola GSM C139 is the Tracfone that Walmart sells for under $20.00.
I'd post a photo of the battery from that phone directly, but they might not appreciate the image and hotlinking bandwidth theft..... But here is the jist of their description of the battery:
"The back cover, which hides the battery compartment, has no backlash, though can be easily removed. A 920 mAh Li-Ion battery is applied. The maker claims it is capable of about 450 hours of standby time and about 11 hours of talks. In Moscow we had the device working for averagely 5-6 days in case of two hours of talks and minimal use of other functions. Full recharging takes approximately 2 hours. Battery life is rather untypical for this class and makes a good advantage of the phone."
---------------------------------------
Lithium batteries are getting pretty cheap. I've imported a few at a time from China for as little as $3.50 each for my own hobby electronics use. Imagine how much less Motorola pays for them buying by the thousands at a time.
They are no longer so esoteric as to be used only in top of the line devices, nor are they any longer so expensive that it is practical to re-engineer devices for NiMH or NiCd batteries just to save a couple of bucks on a discount model.
P.S. {to everyone} I finished my BLOG ENTRY on this subject if you want a better idea of where I'm coming from, and what is at the root of some of our minor disagreements from last night/this morning.
Hello we're your virgins
I see. So 'throw away' phone should just be called a trac phone. Throw away gives the false impression that you use it once and toss it, like a disposable camera. Even on a show like Law & Order they call them throw aways.
Thanks for the clarification!
"Given the secrets that the NYT chose to expose, even if only for communication, why wouldn't the terrorists want tons of disposable cell phones?"
"Bingo! As I also suggested in this thread, these phones might not be detonators at all. They could very well be the terrorists' attempts to circumvent the surveillance that the NYT clued them in on. These phone purchases are PROOF that the NYT is helping the terrorists! They show the terorists are changing their tactics after learning about US methods through the MSM. This is something that needs to be spread, so that as many people understand it as possible. It's a direct connection between the NYT's leaks and terrorists' changes in tactics..."
That makes absolute perfect sense. Thanks bunches NY SLimes. It definitely explains all these cell phone purchases. This should be said LOUD & CLEAR!!!!!
No, I don't think that is a correct way to look at it either.... Because in this particular case, it IS intended to be used once (or a few times in just a very short period)then thrown away or otherwise disposed of.... For SECURITY purposes, not because it is no longer functional.
I think though that a more appropriate term is an ANONYMOUS phone... That is thrown away when it becomes "hot".
Here is an excerpt of what I just finished finished writing up in my blog on the subject:
____________________________________
The media and some of the 'regular people' discussing this issue are using the terms "untraceable" (or disposable), and that is not an accurate term: By the very nature of the cellular network, a cell phone is very precisely tracked and traced every time it is turned on, whether you are making a call or not. A more precise term would be "ANONYMOUS"
By using a phone purchased for cash in a place where he is unknown and activated online by another person using a fake name and address, then passed on to him in secret, a terrorist has a very very 'clean', anonymous device with which he can communicate safely and securely with just about anyone in the world, including terrorist mastermind Ayman al-Zawahiri on his satellite phone while hiding in a cave on the Pakistan / Afghanistan border. And as long as the phone is disposed of promptly, it would take an absolute miracle to intercept the actual conversation, much less identify and capture the terrorist in the field who is getting his last minute instructions on completing his terror mission.
The average Joe buying such a phone isn't buying it to throw it away, since they are rechargeable and you can buy more prepaid minutes. I think I read that and that's correct! Also people with no credit card (still required I believe to buy a cell phone with a plan) can buy the trac phone with cash. The original idea behind this type of phone I would imagine.
The criminal and/or TERRORIST is buying it to use once and throw it away and not be traced/tracked as to having been the user, so yes, anonymous user of an anonymous phone!! The average Joe who continually uses his trac phone could be traced/tracked, not identity wise, but call wise?? Am I correct on any of this now??!! LOL!
By Jove! I think she's got it!
;-)
Although, actually, the honest "Average Joe" using one is very likely to have his real identy known.
Because they would have no particular reason to lie when completing the activation, may have used a debit or credit card to buy the phone from the store and probably will use a credit card if they buy additional minutes online.
The Tracfones are not INHERENTLY anonymous. It is just that normal consumer behavior can easily be subverted should one desire to remain anonymous.
(Sorry about complicating the issue even further for you.)
