Once again, terrorists targeted the heart of Europe. And the threat seems to be growing all the time. SPIEGEL ONLINE spoke with terror expert M.J. Gohel about the effectiveness of security measures, the creation of new terrorists and how the West can win the ideological battle.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The foiled attacks in London could have killed thousands of people.the July 7, 2005 attacks on the London subway and bus system paid off?
Gohel: Absolutely. The United Kingdom has been under threat from Islamist extremist groups for a long time. There were some cynical voices arguing that these security measures were not necessary, but everything that has happened since 9/11 has shown that the UK, and Europe as a whole, faces a major threat and it's very important to maintain a high level security at all times. There is no room for complacency. Still, even though the attack was thwarted, it has resulted in an increase in fears of terror and a sharp tightening of airport security. Will even more intense security measures elsewhere result? Gohel: Security is probably as tight as it can be without disrupting the daily lives of people in what is a free, open democratic society. But certainly, some new measures will be produced -- especially, as you point out, at airports. It is quite obvious from the details emerging from this latest plot that the terrorists have found a way of bypassing the conventional and existing security measures -- scanners, x-ray machines, sniffer dogs -- which would have detected more conventional kinds of explosives. SPIEGEL ONLINE: It seems like no matter how many security measures we take, the risk of terror attacks only continues to grow. Is there anything else we can do to combat the threat?
Gohel: At the moment ....

What characteristic does Nelson Mandela represent that might apply to islamists?
I would choose a better example than Nelson; he's an anti-American Socialist who has bad-mouthed Bush in the past. MLK comes to mind...
Nelson Mandela? ROFL.
Like he wasn't a violent, communist, anti American criminal thug. Very funny. Same for his fruitcake wife, Winnie.
Why do Mandela, Castro, Che, Mao, Stalin, Mugabe, Arafat, etc. all get a pass from the press and the left?
They'd just murder him, no matter who he was.
Headless, underneath a sand dune someplace.
She's busy now getting a clitorectomy and arranging for one of her daughters to be stoned for being raped by her brothers, father and uncles.
I think the Mullah's of Iran and the President of Iran as supposedly working on that as we speak.
His prediction that the Antichrist will appear and lead them to the total destruction of the west -- is shall we say a BIT PREMATURE. Perhaps a gneration a head of its time
But I have little dowbt that Radical Islam's path of destructuin that is moving city by city and nation to nation will continue -- and culminate with the fall of europe.
I think Winnie had quite a tire recycling business as I recall.
"Like he wasn't a violent, communist, anti American criminal thug. Very funny. Same for his fruitcake wife, Winnie."
Precisely. Mandela and his wife did everything they could to support the terrorist tactics of the communist-supported ANC, with Mandela letting others do the dirty work for him.
It was only after it was clear that the white minority was going to voluntarily give up power that Mandela emerged from prison as some sort of senior diplomat/elder statesman.
Pretty much the same as the Islamists -- full of terrorism until they get their way, take over a country, and wipe out (literally) the opposition. Suddenly they are now calm and cultured on the surface, now that they have what they want
Mandela was arrested and found with the plans for government buildings which he and his cronies planned on blowing up. I'd say Mandela and the terrorists are a perfect match.
