Because the Washington Post wants to obscure the basic reality of the situation, we believe that visitors to the nation's capital should be warned that there is a crime emergency in effect, sparked by a sharp increase in homicides, and they are potential victims.
The fact is that white tourists are being injured and killed by roving black male gangs, who are even showing up in exclusive areas such as Georgetown where some rich reporters live behind iron gates. The Post, however, has a policy of deliberately keeping the public in the dark about the real nature of the problem.
In D.C., it appears, you're not supposed to talk about the racial aspect of the problem. Black police chief Charles H. Ramsey temporarily reassigned a white police commander who warned residents to be aware of suspicious black people in a section of the city where a white man, a British citizen by the name of Alan Sennit, was murdered by having his throat slit by a group of black male thugs. Ramsey considered his comments racially offensive, even though they were true.
The commander, Andy Solberg, had said, "This is not a racial thing to say that black people are unusual in Georgetown." Georgetown is the fancy and affluent area of the city that was described in a July 16 Post headline as "a virtually all-white enclave." While Solberg was reassigned for drawing attention to the potential threat posed by groups of black males wandering through white areas of the city and killing people, Courtland Milloy of the Post in a July 12 column quoted Ramsey himself as saying that "Young black males, in groups of five to six, ages 13 to 15, are displaying handguns and beating their victims."

Agreed. DC is vastly different form the 80's. It is far safer, cleaner, and changed from back then. Is it suburbia? Are you kidding. There are spots where you have to use common sense. But gentrification has moved the "problem" east into PG at a pretty good rate.
The 2D commander Andy Solberg was reinstated. He was a beat cop in my neighborhood in the early 80's. Good, very smart street cop. He's real.
The vast majority of crime is black on black. And I mean "vast". It just doesn't make the news, and often meets a little jury nullification, to be honest about it.
The uptick in crime this Summer is a surprise. It could very well be that the police where the bad guys live is really tightening the screws there. Haven't have a chance to talk with my local LT yet.
I checked the "about page" of every poster up to post #69 and could find none that claimed to be from DC so I'm replying to you Mr. Bates.
For years I've wanted to photograph the Jefferson Memorial on a moonlit night. I've wanted to see The Wall and the new WWII memorial. The reason I have not is very simple. CRIME!
As a not-so-young white male, I have no desire to be "Herbed" by a bunch of thugs committing an "economic crime" as David Dinkins would describe it.
It's a real shame when a citizen (and a vet.) must fear for his well being when visiting the Nation's Capitol.

I was stationed at Marine Barracks 8th and I from 93-95. I remember being on duty at night and listening to the gun battles raging just blocks away. They actual sent out an order that Marines would not go running off post by themselves, and that women Marines, even in a group would be accompanied by a male Marine when they went running off post. You are right, D.C. in the early 90s was a dangerous place, and had a wild west feel about it.
How about the southeast? I lived on B.A.F.B. for 4 years in the 60s. Have the gangs taken that over yet?
I worked in Anacostia in 91-92, that was quite the experience.
I've been here since 1998. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
I'll bet. Advice for all people...stay away from Anacostia. And Northeast. :-)
You're actually pretty safe at the touristy places, e.g. Smithsonian, National Zoo, White House, the Mall, Supreme Court, etc until dark...and even then the odds are pretty good. RFK Stadium (home of the Nationals) is in a somewhat dicey neighborhood, but if you're going to a game and take the Metro you'll be with thousands of other fans, so you're odds of being massacred by a rampaging band of underprivileged youths is fairly negligible.
The Metro (subway system) is pretty safe during the day and crowded times, e.g. after ball games, and since DC can be a very confusing city in which to drive and very expensive to park, I would use them.
I live about 50 miles away, so I don't know much about hotels. Tyson's Corner and Reston (both Virgina) are pretty easy to use as a base of operations. If you don't mind a drive, Frederick MD is nice too...and very convenient to Gettysburg and Antietam/Sharpsburg if you are interested in Civil War battlefields.
I haven't been to Georgetown in a long time, but when I did there, the people walking around were VERY DIVERSE. The residents might not be, but there are a lot of bars and restaurants and it's kind of a party place. I didn't necessarily see it as "touristy," but I did see it as "openly intoxicated-y," "easy to get in a fight-y" and "you could get mugged-y"
I'd come...chances are you and yours will only be grazed by the non-stop gunfire...and then you'll have a story to tell ;-).
Advice for all who are *really* afraid of visiting the nation's capital for fear of blacks attacking them: Just stay away. I'm sure you'll be a lot safer in your own parts.
Actually, the grounds at St. E's are very nice. Landscaped since the 1870's. The exterior court scenes for "A Few Good Men" were filmed there.
Before that period where all heck seemed to be breaking loose, I thought things were actually kind of peaceful around DC.
Never been on the Hospital's grounds but have been all over the Navy Yard, Naval Station and Bolling. Would not stray too far from the main roads though.
Check the preamble to your copy of the constitution. Mine doesn't say anything about "life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness." Hint: it's the DOI, not the constitution.
