Terrorists were planning to unleash a series of deadly mid-air explosions on flights between London and America on August 16, it has been revealed today.
Members of the terror group, who were arrested in a series of raids by anti-terror police yesterday, were due to mount a dry run today to check if they could smuggle components for liquid explosives through Britain's airports.
United Airline tickets dated next Wednesday were found by police at the home of one of the raided addresses.
One US intelligence official told today's Evening Standard: "The bombers were a couple of days from a test, and a few days from doing it."
The airlines targeted were United, American and Continental, which fly to New York, Washington and California.
Today the Bank of England named and froze the assets of 19 of the 24 air terror suspects arrested. The bank was acting under the instruction of Chancellor Gordon Brown and on the advice of the police and security services.
It acted under powers granted by the United Nations to tackle the financing of terrorism in the wake of the September 11 2001 attacks. Its action means it is a crime to make their money available without a licence from the Treasury.
The oldest of the named suspects is 35 and the youngest 17. Thirteen of them are from east London - nine from Walthamstow, one from Chingford, one from Leyton, one from the Limehouse and Poplar area and one from Clapton.
Four are from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and the other two are from Birmingham and Stoke Newington, north London.
The imam of Walthamstow mosque, where many of the suspects live, urged the Muslim community to remain calm and assist the police in their inquries. The unnamed imam added: "We'd like to remind people that the suspects are innocent until proven guilty."
Meanwhile, a senior Pakistani government official said today that two British nationals arrested in Pakistan provided information about the alleged UK air terror plot.
The UK remains on a "critical" level of alert against terrorism and air passengers at UK airports are expected to face widespread disruption again today following the introduction of new anti-terrorism measures yesterday including a ban on hand luggage.
The plot, which was described as an attempt to commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" by blowing up passenger jet, may have been thwarted just days before it was due to be carried out.
It would be silly to use something like this as a diversion as it actually heightens security everywhere.
Yes I know. But what I was saying is that she had it on purpose b/c the plan was to put some part of a liquid explosive in the baby's bottle to carry on a plane.
From what has been released, there doesn't seem to any cities that were targeted. With this type of attack - an explosion to rip apart the plane - it would be very difficult to inflict any significant casualties on the ground.
Yeah, I know what you're saying but my point is that would be totally in character with these islamists to not abort a baby because abortion is an abomination to Allah but then not hesitate to take it along on a suicide mission.
I really don't see how baby formula at that time would have been critical to their attack. If they needed to conceal a white looking liquid then they could just as easily have done it with an adult with milk.
Also, there was one baby put 10 planes were supposedly targeted.
"It is believed that terrorists were planning to use liquid explosives to blow up the aeroplanes and as a result, airport security checks are forcing mothers to taste their bottles of baby milk before boarding."
Now this is my last reply, some people like to argue just to argue. I'm done playing.
I'm glad right now, I and wife will be flying into National on the 16th.
Thank you for including the other Continental hubs. You are correct about the airports you mentioned as being international ports of departure/arrival for overseas flights. I didn't know they were also hubs for Continental.
This makes it somewhat easier to sort out what airports may have been the targets for 10 aircraft. How many times have documentaries on Al Quida (sp) mentioned how patient these people are in regard to planning and effecting their terror plans. Just when the world starts to get comfy with flying again....
Truthfully there is no way we can absolutely be sure that millions of passengers cannot slip some innocuous package onboard. It is inevitable.
What we should do is as the Israelis do; look for terrorists, not for weapons. Look for nervous, sweating, shifty people. They are about to die, they may be showing some stress. Look for empty eyes. Look for cash tickets bought in numbers. And yes, look for Muslims. Even the 'lily-white' converts. When in doubt, pull passengers aside and interview them. We should have El Al train the TSA.
that was close!
Lawrence of Arabia born.
Abu Nidal died (some idspute on this). Maybe the date means nothing.
I am beginning to lean towards TWA 800 as being the first successful attack of this type.
I don't see what you are arguing about. It's obvious that the woman didn't have the baby just as a terrorist device as one baby does no good when you are trying to down 10 planes.
And it's not clear what your quote from the British newspaper is supposed to prove. Mothers have been forced to taste baby formula and even bottled breast milk way before this incident.
So again, if they were trying to down 10 planes, how is one baby on one plane going to help?
I've always thought that something more was a play on that flight but the thing that makes me doubt it is that no one has ever come forward to claim responsibility.
Yes and no. Who is to say they aren't trying to divert our attention to say, the skies (airlines), while they approach by land or sea?
Knowing people in the trucking industry, I've heard that area is a BIG target for terrorism and truck hijackings.
Thanks, - I should have been a little more clear. above which cities were they planning on blowing up planes. Just curious about general locations. I had heard some cities mentioned and even a diagram of where the planes were scheduled to go.
There wouldn't be loss of life from an explosion in the air (unless someone got hit by a large piece of debris), but I am sure it would scare the *^$% of everyone underneith, which is half their goal.
I feel like we are going through the post 9/11 days right now. When everyone was unsure of what was going to happen next.
As in Psalms 91:11: My prayer for all of you:
"For He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."
On right side, a "strict" aisle: here, boarders pass through multiple x-rays, MRI, barking dogs, lecherous old men wearing latex gloves, and lastly members of the NYFD in wife-beaters, holding heavy lead pipes...
On left side, an express aisle: 15-foot long, wall-to-wall, 3-inch deep depression in floor. Thousands of copies of the Koran fill this shallow walkway depression.
Same thing for customs, court-houses, and welfare offices. And DMV. And Wal-Mart
Budget negligible, no unreliable technology, immediately implementable, elevates "seperation of church and state" to unheard-of levels...
(And thanks especially for the hug. :)
All are Muslims, but not all are men; TWO ARE WOMEN.
One of my oldest and dearest friend's birthday is September 11th.
Bizarre. Just bizarre.....
