Preventing the Unthinkable ("defang" them, that will mean hitting Syria and Iran)
American Spectator ^ | 8/10/2006 | R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr

WASHINGTON -- It seems to me that the Islamofascists of Hezbollah have made a parlous mistake. They have demonstrated that they have missiles that can cause dreadful localized carnage and that they are continuing to improve those missiles. Someday these weapons will be able to cause widespread carnage. Hezbollah's killers have demonstrated that they will infiltrate their brutes into civilian neighborhoods and use suicide bombers. They have refused to abide by United Nations resolutions. They have revealed that they have powerful supporters in Syria and Iran. Actually the Syrians and Iranians have not been coy about showing their support for Hezbollah's brutal asymmetrical warfare, and here they too have made a mistake. In their unconscionable bellicosity Hezbollah's guerrillas, the Syrians, and the Iranians have all donned bull's-eyes. They have made themselves targets. That is the only rational deduction. Quite obviously rational deduction does not have a place in the mentality of Hezbollah's leader, the Rev. Hassan Nasrallah, in the mentality of the Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who raves on about how Israel must be destroyed and the misery he is going to cause America. Rational deduction does play a role in the mentality of the Israelis and the Americans. Both are now aware of how dangerous Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran are. And the clock is ticking, for as the distinguished scholar of the Middle Eastern affairs, Bernard Lewis, noted in the Wall Street Journal the other day, "It seems increasingly likely that the Iranians either have or very soon will have nuclear weapons at their disposal."

So what is the rational deduction we are to make regarding brutal irrational opponents who are on their way to controlling nuclear weapons?

Can't believe this isn't our national motto...
...Islamofascists with nukes is unthinkable.

Excellent post BTW, thx. Now that the latest terror extravaganza has been thwarted, I think we can expect plenty of good, cut to the bone articles to appear on FR.

During the Iran-Iraq War, the Ayatollah Khomeini imported 500,000 small plastic keys from Taiwan. After Iraq invaded Iran in September 1980 and the Iranians initially suffered military reverses, Khomeini recruited Iranian children, some as young as twelve years old, and sent them to the front. There, they marched across minefields toward the enemy lines in human waves, clearing a path with their bodies. Every one of them had one of those Taiwanese keys hung around his neck…and the children were told that these were their Keys to open Paradise.

No joke.

These children who ran to their deaths in suicide attacks were part of the Basiji, a mass movement created by Khomeini after the Revolution in 1979 and put on the front lines after the war began. The Basij Mostazafan--or "mobilization of the oppressed"--was a volunteer militia, most of whose members hadn't even turned 18 yet. They went by the thousands, willing martyrs for Khomeini and the regime.

Today the slaughter of the Basiji is a source of Iranian legend and national pride...believe it or not. Since the end of the Iraq war in 1988, the Basiji have vastly increased both in numbers and influence, as a cadre of loyal heroes of the Islamic Republic. They’ve been used mostly as religious police to enforce Sharia in Iran, and as Allah's own storm troopers against dissidents. And Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s president, served as a Basij instructor during the Iran-Iraq War…and is now the poster boy for the movement. Recruited from the more conservative and impoverished parts of the population (the exact social class Hitler used for the SA), the Basiji swear absolute loyalty to the Supreme Leader Ali Khameini, Khomeini's successor. During Ahmadinejad's run for the presidency in 2005, the millions of Basiji all over Iran got solidly behind Ahmadinejad in every Iranian town, neighborhood, and mosque and pushed his presidency. He was their guy..and the regime's.

Re-examine that little bit of information for a second…the man who trained children to blow themselves up for Allah at the Mullah’s behest is now the country’s president.

*I hope POTUS and the Militray realise just how dangerous this situation is. I hope we don't wait. We must attack first. The Mullah's mouthpiece has already invited POTUS and America to convert (in his letter to Bush). Before attacking the Kaffir Islamic Doctrine requires the Kaffir be invited to accept Mohammed and Islam. That has been done, officially.

The West heard Hitler but didn't take him seriously until almost too late. We had BETTER be listening now

Why can our leaders not learn from history? We defeated a powerful enemy in world war II by utterly destroying their will to fight through overwhelming firepower applied directly to the people and infrastructure. Once they capitulated we rebuilt their countries and economies. We did not win their hearts and minds

It is a popular statement that "It's not the people of Iran (insert country of your choice) but it is the government so we have to use surgical strikes to avoid "colladeral" damage." BS! Our enemies won't be defeated until the entire populations of the enemy country is defeated. Then and only then can we focus on regieme change and be able to rebuild the econimies and social structure.

I agree with the article but, unfortunately, trying to convince liberals that this is an absolute necessity is less easy. Liberals believe: "live and let live", "treat everyone equally", "Muslims are just righting the injustices we have perpetrated against them", "we are getting only what we deserve", "They just want what we want", etc., etc., etc.

How do you even begin to rationalize with that kind of idiocy? Liberals aren't even capable of holding a debate on the topic. Instead, when they see that they are losing the debate, they simply shift the topic and won't stick to the subject at hand. It isn't until one of the Islamic murderers is about to saw their head off with a dull, rusty knife that they begin to understand the argument against Islamofascism - and, by then, it's too late!!

Its a good article but as I sit here today and note that America is pressuring Israel to stop its ofensive in Lebanon I see absolutely no reason to have any confidence that we will do anything about Iran other than talk and bluster.

yepper! The key to security in the Middle East is a smoking hole where Syria once stood. A BIG smoking hole.

We'll still be out dicking around with the French in the UN, pretending that their opinions actually mean something, when word comes in of a massive chemical attack on Tel Aviv via scud missile, and the subsequent multiple thermonuclear detonations over Damascus.
