Boston may have been one of the targets in the alleged plot to blow up airplanes headed to the United States from Great Britain, according to published reports NewsCenter 5's Steve Lacey reported Friday that information out of London Friday is in sharp contradiction to what Gov. Mitt Romney said Thursday about the plot.
Several British newspapers are quoting U.S. officials saying the planes targeted by the terrorists were headed to New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston.
British authorities said that the plan was to blow up planes in mid-flight using explosives smuggled in hand luggage. The newspapers reported the bombs were to detonate not over the Atlantic Ocean -- but over the cities while the planes were landing, causing even more casualties on the ground. Despite these reports, the governor is standing by his assertion that the Hub was not at risk.

Does he have to be painted as a liar because he's not giving up all the state secrets and preventing unnecessary panic among his people? He did, after all, call up the National Guard, and that in itself was very telling, without TELLING.
If the planes exploded over a major city, or at the airport when landing, there would be truly stunning loss of life and economic disaster for that city. I think some smaller cities thought they were immune, not "important" enough, but the truth is that any city here is important.
For a simple set of liquid explosives, as described in other sources, you wouldn't need to go anywhere. With a little practice you could do it by hand under a blanket or jacket in a few seconds.
Trying frantically to set your shoe one fire is one thing. Slipping something into a bottle of Gatorade is another. Once a device like that gets on a plane, it's pretty much over. Even if you fail to pull it off, you're not going to attract any attention, as opposed to Richard Reid, who got beat down as soon as the other passengers saw him take a match to his Nikes.
"...but over the cities while the planes were landing, causing even more casualties on the ground."
We need the Captain Obvious picture.
Wouldn't work unless all the planes were landing near simultaneously. The Brits suggested 10 airliners, but after the first one or at most two detonated over a city you can be assured that no more incomings would be allowed over cities.
I see a reduction in baggage limits in our future.
Doesn't seem likely for Boston. The incoming routes are mostly over water or south of town, never over the city itself.
I kind of expected Philly to be one of the cities targeted.
The Good news is, your son "is" flying out of Logan today. A few inconviences but he will be home safely. Logan airport is inconvenient enough as it is.
You're right, but I don't think that would have to be the case. I'm guessing they'd probably pick a time right when the first set of planes was to be over a city, and make that 'go time' for all parties. It would be safest for them, and more terrifying for us. Some planes would be over cities, some over land, some over water. We'd have the full range of crash site dramas unfolding; desperate searches at sea, urban sites with chunks of airliner spread around, rural hills with emergency vehicles swarming around. A true disaster.

Mitt Romney: Blatant Politician (possibly second only to Bill Clinton)
Philly's got such a low self-image, even terrorists won't target it.
You're right, why should we even be concerned? Everyone, nothing to see here, Religion of Peace (tm) being profiled again.
The Airbus that hit Queens in November 2001 killed everybody on board but, again, only 5 on the ground.
Even if the plane and all its contents and passengers were shredded into shrapnel, most of the pieces would reach a terminal velocity of less than lethal force before hitting anybody on the ground.
I'm guessing it's the 20+ suicide bombers that got rolled up in London, plus whatever the authorities found on the scene. Since there was an investigation lasting several months, I'm sure they've got more than a little bit of evidence that will emerge.
Or did you think the cops were going to lay out all the evidence on day one? Since when have they done that for any crime?
wow the mod's are quick today aren't they.
