Because the Grammy's hadn't yet invented the lifetime achievement award, and the voter thought Tull deserved something. It's an award show, they're inherently stupid, and the members of Tull think it's absolutely hilarious, they didn't even watch the show.
That would be Deep Vein Thrombosis, which isn't a baby boomer condition so much as a frequent traveler condition (comes from having your legs immobile for long stretches of time), which Ian got a nasty case of on a trip to Australia and almost died (it's very frequently fatal as it stops blood from circulating through your body). Like a lot of folks who have dealt with DVT Ian had never heard of it before he got it, and after his brush some org approached him for some PSA and he said sure. Nothing pathetic about trying to help people not die, anybody who does a lot of traveling, especially by plane, for their job is at risk, some big deal Olympic figure skater almost died from it around the same time Ian had his troubles.
Nope Locomotive Breath!
I've pretty much realized, I'm Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die. I couldn't listen all of the way through that, out of fear that y'all were springing Stairway on me.
Are you saying that "Male Supremacy" or "Suck My D**k" aren't Grammy material?!?
[buncha elitist sissies]....;D
My ex had them & the better turntable when we married. By the time of the seperation my turntable was long gone. Needless to say, he got the whole collection, including everything we bought during the marriage. ::snuffle::
Ditto
Lot's of blues tones to the music.
For the very same reason as you!
Ever hear "Crossfire"?
Great moments in lyrical history;
"I've a tenner in my skin tight jeans.
You can touch it if your hands are clean."
I have one of my iPods connected to a big amp in the trunk of my trike and while I usually have some kind of heavy metal going while I ride, *occasionally*, [like if I pull up beside somebody blasting rap at a stop light], I'll click over to some especially lilting little Tull tune and crank it full blast.
"Moths" and "Rover" seem to to be especially disturbing to the aforementioned rappers.
[or if I'm feeling really quirky that day, I'll run Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" theme. That, and a sinister smile gets me some strange looks]....;-]
I'm listening to that song as we speak! (SMD)
"A" was one of the most under-rated albums, ever.
Crossfire
Spring light in a hazy May
and a man with a gun at the door.
Someone's crawling on the roof above
all the media here for the show.
I've been waiting for our friends to come
Like spiders down ropes to free-fall
A thirty round clip for a visiting card
admit one to the embassy ball.
Caught in the crossfire on Princes Gate Avenue
In go the windows and out go the lights.
Call me a doctor. Fetch me a policeman.
I'm down on the floor in one hell of a fight
I'm just a soul with an innocent face
a regular boy dressed in blue,
conducting myself in a proper way
as befitting the job that I do.
They came down on me like a ton of bricks,
Swept off my feet, knocked about.
There's nothing for it but to sit and wait
for the hard men to get me out.
Caught in the crossfire on Princes Gate Avenue
In go the windows and out go the lights.
Call me a doctor. Fetch me a policeman.
I'm down on the floor in one hell of a fight
Calm reason floats from the street below,
and the slow fuse burns through the night.
Everyone's tried to talk it through
but they can't seem to get the deal right.
Somewhere there are Brownings in a two-hand hold,
cocked and locked, one up the spout.
There's nothing for it but to sit and wait
for the hard men to get me out.
Caught in the crossfire on Princes Gate Avenue
In go the windows and out go the lights.
Call me a doctor. Fetch me a policeman.
I'm down on the floor in one hell of a fight.
Benefit and Aqualung.
Four great albums. After that, Tull began to slip - IMHO.
Wow.
I'm not even gonna ask *why*....LOL!
I still count Benefit as a favorite.
"With You There To Help Me" is sort of my song to my hubby....:)
[ain't that just sappy and sentimental?]
On the other hand, he had me paint the "Broadsword & The Beast" artwork onto 3 separate Harley choppers.
They're gone now but I still have a 'matching jacket' with the 'moth man' on the back....;D
Torched your old Uriah Heep 8-tracks, too?
By the way, one Tull album no one seems to know, but which I think is extraordinary is A Passion Play. It opens with a man observing his own funeral, and follows him as he faces his judgment in the afterlife. Really a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece of work with an incredible musical suite.
Those were all pre-divorce from the first wife.
"Heavy Horses" marked his transition into newly married second wife and kids country squire mode.
Catfish Rising is great as is Roots To Branches.
Later he started writing albums dedicated to chili peppers and dead cats and I sort of lost the faith.
"Jump Start" off of Crest of a Knave kicks ass and Rock Island has its moments.
[Kissing Willie is hilarious]
Broadsword & the Beast is great for the subliminal psychological twists.
Stormwatch contains the incomparable DunRingill and that song alone is worth the price.
Same with Thick As A Brick.
It's packed with bitter social sarcasm and brutal observations yet most only know the edited radio play cuts.
And no one's even mentioned the seminal Minstrel in the Gallery.
'Cold Wind to Valhalla' still gives me chills.....;]
Yeah. I was at a concert where he compared it to the then ongoing Iranian hostage crisis, and noted in passing, that "We (Britain) got ours back." to cheers from the crowd.
